Stock or after market?
 

I have a 1987 IROC Z28 and I am interested in your thoughts on my exhaust system. I currently have the original muffler on it and I am considering an after market muffler. I am an older guy and do not want it to sound extremely loud. I think that the stock muffler sounds nice but I do not have any other experience with after market mufflers or the sound of them. Do you think that replacing the stock muffler will be a dramatic change or just be an unnecessary expense?

If you like the way it sound it is an unnecesary expence. but if you are looking to have a better deep sound I sugest you put a set of headers and leave the rest like it is.

Go to YouTube and type in 1987 Camaro then the name of the muffler you want to here. Listen to a few and that should help you pick one out.
Heres the names of a few =

Hooker
Theres more but slip my mind at the moment.
Also the sound a car makes is IMO very important. After all it's a huge part of the cars make up. What you hear directly affects a person's impressions of the car.

This is an example of how much IMO changing the stock system to aftermarket will make a car sound meaner. This is a 3in cat back replacing stock. If you just do the mufflers it will have a slightly softer tone

Personally I’m a Flowmaster guy but that 80 series is probably too loud for him.

Oh well I will post a video I found of a 3in. Flowmaster American Thunder cat back with the 80 series muffler like mine .I don't know what he did to his tips but mine came with 2 really nice 3in. stainless ones.

Lol. Id bet most people on this board no idea what the stock exhaust sounded like... the early twin muffler setup sounded surprisingly agressive for a stock exhaust

If the car is basically stock then it doesn't matter much. Do what you like the sound of. An 80series flowmaster will make similar power to stock but sound very aggressive. Some better mufflers will make more power without getting that much louder. some of the later factory mufflers work very well. Running high 11's in the 1/4 I wasn't able to document any difference between a 4th gen stock muffler and a straight pipe

Just get a stock replacment Magnaflow 3" kit. it has nice polished tips, and with a cat, its not too loud at all. Will give you some extra performance. And sounds GREAT when you nail it, Otherwise very docile. And its stainless steel, so you wont have to buy another one for a long time..

So far the only Magnaflow cat back for his car appears tohave 3in. pipe at the cat side (intake from the cat) so an adapter will have tobe used or he can consider a Magnaflow cat with a stock size intake and a 3in.output side so it will directly bolt on.

I don't know what the exact stock inlet and out let size should be so some on else will have to figure that out and narrow down the selection in the link above.
Side note = You will not get the exact sound/tone of a full cat back.

Yup. Especially if its the original cat. Def replace it with a high flow unit. Chances are its pretty clogged up, and isnt flowing anyway it should be. Any high flow 3" will do. Magnaflow is a nice piece though, and would match the said catback perfect.

I was going to suggest the Magnaflow system as I have one on my GTA and love the sound, the fit, and the stainless construction. The only thing not to like (if you are picky) is the huge chrome tips off the muffler.

BTW, the list price is $510, Jeg's price is too high.
