Lift need to install Walker intermediate pipe over axle?

1 Attachment(s)
Is a lift required to install the intermediate pipe over the axle? Installing on 1984 L69. System is Walker with Quiet Flow muffler. Intermediate pipe is apparently 2.5 inch.

Hoping to use 12 ton jack stands in the garage, vs taking to a shop for a lift.

Thanks.

No Lift Needed,I Did Mine In the Garage In 2000,After You Jack Up The Car Put Your Jack Stands Under The Rear Frame Rails As Pictured Let The Car Down On The Jack Stands So Your Axle/Suspension Can "Hang",This Will Give You More Clearance To Get Over The Axle,I Also Removed The Bolt From The Tie Rod Brace, You Can Push It Down So It Contacts The Rear Axle Tie Rod,That Will Give You 1 To 2 Inch More Clearance.

Thank you. That's very helpful, particularly with the images.

As simple as the task may be, seeing such images makes all the difference.

Finding a safe place to put a jack and/or jack stand under these cars is a challenge, IMO, particularly with regard to not bending subframe sheetmetal.

And good to hear I'll be able to get this done at home.

I pulled the wheel and dropped the shock, lca and roll bar and slid it in from the side.

Thanks naf for the tip. Much appreciated. Now I have no excuse to not get it done at home. Not that I was looking for one.

I did just what gt4373 said and dropped the brace and panhard bar on the passenger side and let the rear suspension hang down. However I did mine while I was replacing the fuel pump so all of that stuff was already out lol!

Re: Lift need to install Walker intermediate pipe over axle?

Dropped the muffler and tailpipes on Saturday. There right on top was Dynomax Super Turbo. New system is Walker Quiet Flow SS. Both use the same intermediate pipe! Only needed to install new muffler and tailpipes.

Super Turbo was too loud. But frankly the Quiet Flow is still plenty loud. Upside is it left some fun in the driving. Downside is it'll drone at times. Will need to add some body insulation, starting back to front.

The '84 cat/intermediate pipe flange does sit tight against the new Alston SFC. Does add to the body sounds. Will need to replace that connection with something smaller.

Now I have a new unused intermediate pipe. Not sure it's worth the effort to ship back to Rock Auto. May try to sell locally.

The Super Turbo muffler could be used again by someone by welding on a short stub of 2.75 inch ID. Still in excellent shape. 2.5 inch tailpipes are still attached.

Did You Consider The Walker SoundFX It's Suppose To Sound Closer To Factory And Not Be As Loud As The Others.

Nooooo!!! Didn't know of the product. Darn darn darn darn. Sigh.

Looks like less than $50 for the FX at O'Reillys. I had no idea a muffler called Quiet Flow would not be quiet.

At this time in the car refresh effort will tackle window seals and AC. Both will give the next best use of time. Then down the road will try the FX.

If I knew I could get everything off the car in pieces again, without cutting, I'd swap now. But could even have difficulty removing muffler from intermediate pipe now that it has been clamped.

Thanks for the info.
