which exaust is best?

I have an 89 rs with a 305 and 75k miles. I want to make it faster and louder. I am new to this so I don't know a whole lot about what I am doing. I have heard good things about flowmaster & dynomax. Which is best? Are there any others that might be better? I want to go from my cat back. Also, where do I go from here with my stock engine?

Mark A Shields 03-22-2002 12:40 PM

I'd recommend headers first, the stock manifolds and y-pipe are more of a restriction on that motor than the stock cat-back. But if you want to get a cat-back, as everyone knows I'd recommend the Hooker, great performance wise, and sounds great. Sound clip is in the signature.

IROCZTWENTYGR8 03-22-2002 12:57 PM

LOL, :D its like u are on this board all day and just wait for new posts asking "what exhaust". :sillylol:

It depends what kinda sound you are looking for. Flowmaster will be the loudest and is the most used, its also what I like best. 1 5/8's headers are a good idea too, and get all the TBI free mods done.

No4NJunk 03-22-2002 02:27 PM

Damn Mark!!! Your the best thing hooker has going for them. LOL:p FLOWMASTER!! thats all I got to say. Check the sig.

tpi_roc 03-24-2002 02:35 AM

Flow master if you want sound and not power

dynomax if you want power and not sound

hooker if you kick *** :)

88IROC350TPI 03-24-2002 09:14 AM

HOOKER AERO CHAMBERS ARE JUNK DONT BUY THEM YOU'LL SOUND LIKE A *****

Ok, I'm lying ...I just dont want everyones car sounding as good as mine ;)

FormulaKid 03-24-2002 09:57 AM

Borla all the way...a little bit expensive, but worth it.

bigals87z28 03-24-2002 10:50 AM

im not bashing hooker because i want that system myself... but do the tips rust? someone that has them said they do it just might be him because this kid would leave his car out side durring a hurricane...

SLP

Mark A Shields 03-24-2002 01:28 PM

Of course they'll rust and so will anything else chrome if not takin care of. In between is difficult to get to though. I try to wax them once a week when I'm not at college.

Edelbrock RPM Series Cat-Back!

I had the Flowmaster exhaust and I hated the look of the single sided tailpipes. I didn't like the metallic exhaust sound, I like the low, low rumble of the Edelbrock at idle and the powerful roar when I floor it, not the tinny rasp sound of the Flowmaster. I also like the look of a tucked-in tailpipe on each side of the rear.

82zNJ 03-24-2002 06:17 PM

go with hooker , it sounds nice and low rumble at idle but when u get on it it roars. i dont like flowmaster becuz they dont sound good and dynomax ive heard is just for sound, really doesnt give u any proformence gains.

I know no one likes mustangs but there on to something with the MAC sytems, there easy to install, look great, sound even better, plus you dont see them on to many f-bodies. If not hookers would be my second choice and take marks advice and get some headers and a new y-pipe.

Mac all the way! The best sounding third gen I've ever seen has Mac Cat back it flows almost 1/3ed more than Flowmaster and more than Dynomax too. The sound is unreal. The problems are that I cant find a shop anywhere in Missouri that sells them.

DozaChris89TA 03-24-2002 07:57 PM

Hey matt if you really want the MAC's you can get them threw macperformance.com

No4NJunk 03-24-2002 09:17 PM

i dont like flowmaster becuz they dont sound good
Hey 82zNj its funny how flowmasters don't sound good. I wonder how they sell all those thousands of mufflers:rolleyes:. How about trying "I don't THINK they sound good."

IROCZTWENTYGR8 03-24-2002 09:24 PM

82zNj,

theres pretty much nothing that sounds like Flowmaster. If u think they don't sound good, I'm gonna have to get my friend with his 84 Z28 and his friend with an 87 TA (never know if that dudes gonna show up) to the cruise nights and see what you think of them. LOL :) :burnout: :D

86maro305 03-24-2002 11:48 PM

go with the flowmaster. IMO it is the best sound that you can get out of a third-gen, followed by the hooker. bu ti would go with the flowmaster. great sound and good flow.

82zNJ 03-25-2002 11:44 AM

i know what the flowmasters sound like, my brother had one on his 86 sport coupe and he took it off becuz he didnt like it either and at the time i didnt like much either but i like things to be different and thats y i went with hook becuz it sounds different then a flowmaster and a dynomax. its just my opion others my like the flowmaster or not im just givein my opion.

IROCZTWENTYGR8 03-25-2002 12:02 PM

Sometimes they don't sound the same. I've heard 1's that don't sound that good and I've some that sound better than any exhast I've ever heard, and I've heard alot. It depends on engine and the diameter of the pipes, whether its a complete system, and whether you have a converter or not.

Mark A Shields 03-25-2002 01:01 PM

Flows blow:D Nah, just kiddin, certain ones sound good, I just wish I had a hi-flo cat or no cat at all, to see how mine could sound.

Does anyone have any sound clips of this Mac exhaust installed on an F body??? I love the sound of Mustangs but that's about all they have going for them. Just curious how this sounds on a 3rd gen. I heard a new Trans-Am Ram Air do a driveby in town the other day and it had a sweet sounding exhaust on it too definitely not stock. The Flowmaster sound is getting old.

Thanks in advance if anyone has the soundclips.

MAC system

I just got my MAC system in today! Probably won't be installing for a little while ( I have about 5 boxes of parts to install). The thing that sold me was the sound on the Ford 5 liters. if it sounds that good on those toilets its gotta be able rumble an F body. The second thing is no muffler clamps, gaskets, or welding! The tailpipes and primary pipe bolt onto muffler flanges. I can see a ton of daylight through this muffler can't wait to hear it rumble. The only draw back is the cheap looking paint they spray the system with. I opted for the painted tail pipes but after receiving them I wish I spent the extra $100 for the chrome tails. Oh well just have to cash in a favor and have them plated! I have had Flowmasters in the past and loved them. just wanted to try something different. I also have had the dyno max system with the huge tailpipes and liked the look so that helped selling me for the MAC system also. I'll update after install. Shouldn't be a problem pissing off my neighbor!
