Wanting to relocate fuel filler access to behind license plate
 

Alright, this board has a bunch of crafty brains on it, so I'm sure someone has either done this or can thing of a really good way to do it, but basically, I want to shave the filler door of the side of my car and fill the tank from the rear. Something nice and hidden, but not internally, (a la lifting the hatch and fuel in the trunk), if at all possible.

I know that a lot of cars used to fill like this, but many of the rode higher then ours. Also, a lot of those cars are bought as hot rods now and lowered, and they appear to still be working fine, so I'm presenting a challenge if you will. :)

So, who has ideas on how this can be done correctly and function well? I'll take the easy and cheap and the hard an expensive ideas, all are welcome! Thanks all! :)

just remove the tank and all the fuel, cut off the old neck. cover the hole, weld a new one to the rear. cut a hole in the trunk to run the new neck and cover with sheet metal. you will loose some trunk space and likely leak fuel on hard launches.

My guess would be that the tank sits too high in the car now to make it a workable plan....

the only way to really do it without having the filler running through the truck is to run it out behind the interior panels on the driverside. It would require cutting the filler neck probably in half, making the 90 rearward, then through the wheel well into the car. After that, i dont know where on earth you would put the fill car and door. Behind the tail light would be ideal, but im unsure how that would be accomplished.

The issue there, it there is a rod inside the filler neck, which i think works with the baffles to keep fuel from sloshing out the fill neck. That all would have to be modified so fuel doesnt come out the back of the car when you accelerate.

you cant make it work properly without running a tube through the cargo compartment.
just keep it where it is and get a better sealing door.
ive seen a lot of new cars where you hardly see the door when its closed

I have another thought. Because of the chanllenges presented. If you look at (I will say drag cars) they have the tank in the lower part of the "truck" they have to have it sealed from the rest of the car. So they put in a "door" if you will to enclose the tank. You could incoporate that to the back of the plate too. You will lose your lower trunk space, and would want to seal it off and have it vented outside the car if not to the charcol canister.

Just run the fill tube along the fender, and put it behind the tail light. Then design a hinge that lets you swivel the tail light out, and latch it back when youre done. Like one of those push to open/push to close latches.

A little wire clean up so it'll swivel. I can see it working with a little imagination and fabrication. Might have to modify the light bucket so it'll clear the decklid lip and all...

I was never a fan of having the fill cap inside the car.

Except I have a one-piece tail-light blackout that makes accessing, moving, or otherwise doing anything with my lights out of the question. BUT, a friend of mine did come up with another idea that I think I may try because I can't see why it wouldn't work...

..relocating the cap to the door jamb. I'd move the vent down below the door post and place a new filler where the vent once resided. just put a 90 degree on the filler pipe and have it come forward and jury-rig something up to try and lock in the vapors so I'm not getting any glorious odors in the cabin and presto!

Of course, even if some vapors come in, it'll be better then someone else I know who has a fuel cell in his trunk where you can always smell the gas. AND, it'll be extra silly to see people's reactions as they think I'm pouring gas on my driver's seat from where they're standing. ;)

I ran the fuel filler in the trunk !!! It would not work out the back,because of the hatch pull down,and lock !!!!!

I've had some crazy ideas, such as installing a fuel cell as far back as I can, and lowering the "hump" in the hatch area down to a couple inches above the diff., just to get a clean, flat look in the hatch area, just like Fox Body Mustangs. But, this one really beats my idea.

I don't see the problem with running a fuel cell. If you can smell the gas while running a fuel cell, you've got problems on your hand.

86TA, you had a dumb dumb moment.. Don't the filler necks have these little things that screw onto the end, that are literally air tight, called gas caps?

LOL. Just messin' with you.

On the other hand.. I know exactly how this could work. BUY A VETTE.

That's exactly why I've got going on 3 grand put away, to buy a Mustang. I love the design, and just how they're setup in general. 99-04's have fold down seats that open up into the trunk, to make a huge almost hatch like area. I just love the clean look of it, I'm strange.

:lmao:yeah i did. on a stock tank, the gas wont even come out anyway because the filler neck runs into the tank about a foot, so gas doesnt slosh into it at all really.

But yes, ideally, putting the filler behind the tail light would be best, and its the only way to run it without having it run through the truck space. than again, if you get rear ended, the filler can get pushed forward and bust off the tank causing other issues.

Sombody suggested putting the filler int he door jam? thats a really bad idea.

I'm going to go try to take half way decent pictures real quick, since my interior is already disassembled, to show you why this is very impractical. I'll edit this post and post up pictures in a little bit.

The only way you can get around that wheel well, would be by going down. You cannot mount a gas cap sky high in the door jamb, because it gets way too narrow up top for even a 1-1/2" filler neck. So you figure, why can't you go down? Well, you have to work with gravity. You cannot go down with the filler neck more than about 6 inches from where it would be mounted in the door jamb, because it would go below the top of the gas tank. Since you cannot go down further than that to run a filler neck, you wouldn't clear the wheel well. It's just too much hassle man.

On the bright side, this is a joke from a thread of mine. I finally cut my lawn!

Haha Sorry man.. You lost me when you used the phrase jury rig in a thread about modifying your gas tank set up.

You dont want to mess with fuel vapors in a confined area. So ANY getting into the car is unacceptable if you ask me. Putting it in the door jam is a neat idea...but I think you're going to run into big issues there.

What one piece tail light cover do you have? I dont think Ive ever seen a one piece for a Trans AM...got a pic?

Would you be willing to ditch the cover and just use niteshades on the tail lights? Ive seen some VERY nice jobs using that stuff.

Its too bad the tank is higher than the plate recess. You could do it old school and put it behind the plate.

I wouldn't recomend the door jam unless it was a show only car. you would always get fumes into the car during a fill-up since the door would have to be open for access. I do however agree about the taillight procedure.

I think Ive seen it too..but it was on a camaro. The firebirds present a couple different challenges for sure, but the general idea remains the same. The hiccup is his "1 piece" tail light cover. Still not sure what that looks like.
