badgta 06-09-2002 04:06 AM

were they for sale?

how rare is it if he ownes one of them? it's black with ta gold rims, not gta.. all gta emblems, 350tpi, and says he has all the papers.. is it against the law for him to own it?

Black? sounds like something totally unrelated.. likely a hoax. I'd have to see paperwork. The two GTA prototypes were actually both station wagons, yes, station wagons! Actually called the "Kammback". They had some 2nd gens in 1978 too. I think a grand total of TWO of those as well. On the 86, the rear hatch was totally unique and jutted out like a station wagon with really expanded cargo area. I've never seent he inside of one of these rears. They were both monochrome, one white, one red. The white had the 85-87 convex 16" wheels in white, the red had the gold crosslace wheels, also 16".
The white one got destroyed early on, allegedly in a fire, but who knows. The red one is still a regular show car.
I've got a page ont hese cars, although it's pretty darn incomplete and basic, it's got some pics: http://www.indiemonkey.com/firebird/

This pic shows the GTA prototype taken around 1985. Notice the Recaro buckets :D

It also has fender vents:D

Awesome pic, but strange. It has the wheels the white one came with, but the body is just too dark to be white, and it's likely a mid-range color like red or light blue.. I'd guess red, since the other wagon was red. but the wheels.. hmm.

yeah they both had Recaro L-series seats.. settle for nothing for the best :D

Sounds like your Dare officer has a documented piece of historical bullsh!t.

According to both Pontiac and PHS, there were no GTA "prototypes" built.... '86 or any other year. The Y84 code was used in 1986, but it did not denote a GTA.

That B&W photo is the red GTA Kammback wagon.... taken while in storage at PMD. But it is not a GTA prototype. The car was originally a 1985 Recaro-equipped Trans Am that was upgraded to "GTA specs" after the GTAs were introduced in 1987. The photo shows the car during its transformation.... hence the 16" Hi-Tech convex turbo wheels.

I've seen the car in person twice, and sat in the cockpit on one occasion.... boy, I love those Recaro seats. I wish my GTAs had them. The interior rear of the car is something else.... very roomy, and the side windows will pop out for ventilation. It would actually have been an easy modification to make for production.

I'd post some pics, but the ones I have were taken at the same T/A Nationals show as the pics that kizz has on that webpage.

Thanks for the info FR2, I scanned that from the buyers guide.

I wonder where authors come up with this stuff sometimes, heresay, rumor, assumptions?

I hate paying good money for false information !

Yes, Don.... I have that book, and also the previous edition as well. There is supposed to be a new "Standard Catalog of Firebird 1967-2002" out right now, but I've not seen it on stands yet.

One of those Kammback cars was featured on a 1985 Motor Trend cover (it was a blue/silver T/A) as part of a Pontiac article, but I've been unable to find out if this "GTA" wagon is indeed the same car. As stated above, two were built and one was destroyed.... so I guess there is a 50-50 chance that this is that car. :D

Another dead giveaway to its lineage is the 85 mph speedo in the dash as well.... I've never seen under the hood, but it is rumored that the car is powered by a carbed 305 engine.

I'm going to see if I can convince Pontiac to bring it back to Dayton this year for the '02 Trans Am Nationals. Since my red GTA is going this year, I'd like to get a photo of my car with this one-of-a-kind "GTA".
