V6~or~V8?
 

Quick question, My friend is looking to buy a 91z28! I went to go look at it, and noticed that the speedo only goes to 110mph. Can that be a V8? I thought since it only goes to 110, that it would have to be a V6? I'm just trying to do some research for him b~4 he buys the car, Thanxx!

Actually if its like the Firebird line at all, only the GTA was garanteed the 140 Mph speedo, beyond that, the 350 cars and most of the TPI-M5 cars had the 140 Speedo.

In reality it depended on the year, some years it was really cut and dried to determine what speedo and tach the car would get. But other years it could depend on wether or not the perforamnce gear "G92" option was installed, or the Dual cats "N10?"

Although I have never gone through the Camaro information to determine how they handeld the Speedo/Tach combos, I can post the chart for the Firebirds, it may be of some help since the two cars are not all that different.

V6 Z-28? thats a new one :p

Early model 3rd gens with a V8 only had a 85 MPH speedo so speedo means nothing:doh:

My 305 has a 110 actually I think its a 115.............but yeah speedo doesnt mean jack

The 85 Mph speedo was from 82-87, the 140 speedo I think came in 86, definately in 87. The 85 Speedo was droped in 88 for the new 120 speedo for firebirds and 110/115 for Camaros.

Thank you everyone! I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a V6 w/ Z28 Ground effects. We're test driving it today, I'll see what she's got. I just wanted to clear that up b~4 we drove the car. I didn't want him to waste his time on a V6.

I've seen quite a few fast V6 3rd gens. In fact, one slaughtered me at the race track pulling a 13 second pass!

Just for the extra info I have an '86 TA and as far as I know the speedo is stock and it is 140

That was always rather humorous to me. Here you have a Trans Am or Z38 capable of 144.1mph according to a magazine and sporting an 85 mph speedometer. GM put 85 mph speedos in lots of vehicles that could well exceed that. And then we have lots of foreign cars sporting 130, 150, and 160 mph speedos that could only actually muster ~90mph, 109, and 120mph and people assuming the gauge is an accurate portayal of the cars actual top speed. I cannot count how many times I've seen someone look into a car at say something dumb based on the speedometer.."wow, it can go 160" or "your car can only go 85".

Anyway, a 1991 Z28 should have a 110 mph speedo unless it is an L98 car or an LB9/5spd/dualcat correct? Or did G92 specifically trigger the 145 unit which in-turn would have worn the Gatorback 245/50s?

IIRC, it was the law to not have higher than an 85MPH speedo for some years.

I think it was an attempt to reduce speeding :rolleyes: A 73 Riv has a 120 Speedo, but my old 77 Electra only had an 85 Mph speedo. I would think that it was probably a 10 year run where the 85 Mph speedo was the max that they could put on a car.

However you could get an OTC speedo from GM that would go higher for the early 3rd gens if I remember right. Also Kenne Bell made or still makes a 120 Mph speedo for the 80's Regal, GN & GNX. I think it was not "Illegal to have" as much as the cars could not be made with them installed.

If you ever see this speedo, it was aftermarket for the people who didn't want the 85MPH one back in the 80's. I got mine from a parts car. I think you can still buy them from Classic Industries.
