This sounds like more of a "History" question since that's what the f-body will soon be. https://www.thirdgen.org/messageforum3/frown.gif Moving to the History/Restoration board......

OK, GM has never said that they are going to discontinue production of the F-body. Plant contracts to manufacture cars typically run for 10 years. Most automakers renew these contracts for another ten years in the middle of the current contract. Which means that the contract for the Van Nuys Plant started in 1992 and lasts until 2002. It should have been renewed in 1997, for 2002-2012, but it wasn't. This is what has led us to believe that the F-body is going to be discontinued. Personally (ie: my opinion) I don't believe that the f-body will be discontinued. Although I have heard rumors that it will be, but then replaced imeadeately by another car that looks similar the the 2001 camaros.

From what I understand it will only be one car. No Pontiac version. Just Chevrolet. Or vice versa, no Chevrolet, just pontiac. Again it is just a rumor.

Anothe rumor i have heard is that the 5th generation(starting 2002) f-body will either be front wheel drive or All-wheel drive. But still a V-8. Again, just another rumor!!

I could go on and on about all the rumors I have heard. If you would like me too I can but I don't really feel that they are even possible. I have given the two that I think are the most feasible. Again I state that the only fact in this post is that GM has NOT officially annouced that the F-body wil be discontinued, and the the plant does not have a renewed contract. The rest of this post is rumors that I have picked up from various f-body boards, GM's press releases and people that I know.

Just to add to the rumor mill...A couple of months back formen.ign.com reported that the 5th gen Camaro would be one of those retro jobs taking cues from the 1st gen's. Here's the site for your viewing pleasure http://formen.ign.com/news/21852.html
Whadda ya think about that....?

Aren't F-bodies from Ste. Therese, not Van Nuys anymore? But same idea, GM has no products "allocated" to Ste. Therese in the future.

Another rumor I heard about was F-body production was going to skip a year while they re-tooled to use extra capacity at Bowling Green, and then the Camaro would return, but the 5th gen Firebird would actually be a new GTO.

Van Nuys contract till 2002? The Van Nuys plant has been closed for years. There was nothing to renew in 1997.

The current F-bodys come out of Canada. As stated, there are lots of rumors flying around. I've recently heard that there will be a 2002 Firehawk. Basically at this point it's just wait and see what happens.
