Spare Tire for Aluminum IROC rim

Does anyone know where I could locate a new spare
tire for the original aluminum spare tire rim:confused:
Old tire dry rotted.
Tried different tire outlets and no luck.
Just want to mount it and be able to put it the hatch area
for trips.
Misplaced the bottle years ago but would be permanently
inflated.:)

Anyone??

Thanks

Re: Spare Tire for Aluminum IROC rim

are you talking about the space saver tire? or do you want a full size tire and put it in the well at the very rear of the car, where a spare was originally designed to go, hence the tire mount brace back there.

I'm talking about the original space saver tire
that came on the original aluminum spoked
space saver rim.

Just want to be able to put it in the hatch area for trips.

NOS bottle going in original tire location:)

I have one of those aluminum spoke spares & one that looks like a black steelie wheel, but is aluminum. I couldn't find space saver space tires for them either, awhile back.

Post up if you find a source!

Still a work in progress.
Engine and fuel system all fixed up for it but still
working getting the tuning learn curve down without
using it.
Not going to activate any switches until dialed in.
Hate surprises.

Am only going to go 175 to 200 max.
Already making good power on motor.
Drive train the weak link.
Very Ocassional use.( Senior Citizen).:)

Have tried all the tire companies and no luck.
Been trying to think of a special application tire co.
I heard of but not coming to me yet.

Going to go pull old tire and rim out of storage and
get some numbers on size.

Let me know also.

Later:)

BF Goodrich invented the space-saver spare tire. They would be the one to contact for a replacement.

I have that same rim/tire in mine, but there is no bottle in there. Mine is probably dry-rotted too by now.

Why not just put a regular tire on it? Are the space savers 16's? I looked for a pair of these in the junk yard a while back to run at the track as cheap front runners but never found any. I planned to stick regular tires on them.

One is a 14", the other is a 15", both aluminum.

And a full sized tire will not fit in the spare tire compartment, behind the side panel.

Not sure, but did the Black wheel on the left come out in 1989 with the larger rear brakes, or was that a 1LE thing only... My 89 Formula 350 Vert has the Black Aluminum spare...

For the larger rear brakes, is my understanding.

The silver one came out of my 87 GTA, the black one out of my 89 GTA.

Re: Spare Tire for Aluminum IROC rim

The brake issue clearance that was just brought up
I hadn't thought of before.
Running the big Baer 13" Rotors and Calipers on the
front and could be an issue.
Going to get out of storage and try to mount and see
if clears Calipers and rotors on the front. With the Baer setup
the calipher just clears the 16'' rims.

Beginning to think to make sure we keep our AAA road
side assistance paid up.:)
Has anyone tried thier spacesaver rim with bigger brakes?

Later;)

Re: Spare Tire for Aluminum IROC rim

All that stuff is obsolete and for display only. If you need a spare, go fullsize, or find a spare from a modern car that will fit. Junkyard 4th gen spare might be worth looking for. Personally I keep an extra dismounted 16" tire on hand and throw it in the car when I go on long trips. If I lose a tire, I just need to take the flat and the backup tire someplace to be mounted, and I'm back in business. Or just keep your "spare" in your wallet.

PS don't bump 11 year old threads. Just start a new thread when the topic has been dead that long.

The black aluminum wheel was first released in 88 to the Players cars as they were the first with the 1LE brakes. Sadly very few of the early ones exist ... no one raced with the spare. GM provided it AFTER the cars were delivered.

By 1989, 1LE cars had the revised aluminum spare from factory. Not sure if it also appeared in other models - no real data to rely on.

And after than I am not sure ... seems if you got the 16" wheel option, then you got the aluminum spare. But its not consistent. So something else must trigger it.

Now if you just want a spare ... consider the 4th Gen spare. It will fit the larger brakes and it is not one that needs to be inflated. Keep your original one for shows if you must.

Mark.

I wonder if a tire for an old VW would fit... frankly I have no idea whether tires can even be mounted / dismounted from those, but I suppose it'd be worth a try...

A goodyear dealer can R&R those goofy spare tires.

Will a T155/70R17 fit the stock spare tire wheel? https://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireS...rformance=TEMP

Re: Spare Tire for Aluminum IROC rim

Seeing as the stock spares are 14 and 15" wheels, probably not.
