The very SAME ad was in the Delaware Craigslist last week, complete with the same pictures. I think it's safe to say that this is a SCAM.

They are usually always a scam when there is no phone number to call....If a deal looks to good it almost always is..
See the scammers are now using 3rdgens....Our cars must be increasing in interest!

Re: Craigslist ad; 87 IROC CONVERTIBLE w/ 4400 miles.... Less than $5k????

Emailed the email address listed. Here is the response.... TOTAL SCAM:

"First of all I want to thank you for your interest for my car. I sell it at this price because i have just finished with my divorce . The divorce was finished six months ago and the car is mine now . After the divorce I had to buy a new house .
Following the financial crisis I can not afford to pay the bank and I decided to sell the car.
This car is in excellent working conditions, with no scratches, flaws or any kind of damage. The car comes with a clear title in my name .
The VIN is 1G1FP31F2HN163671, you can check it . The car has 4450 real miles.
From the beginning you have to know that for the payment I only request a secure pay method , I prefer the payment to be done using eBay services.
We will use a safe payment method because I am affiliated with eBay and I have a purchase protection account.
The final price that I want for this car is $4500. I will pay for shipping .
If you are interested in buying the car , please give me your full name and address so I can initiate the deal through eBay.
I will wait your answer(if you are interested to buy) very soon.

She's a doctor, huh? All that education and yet her writing seems to be on a 6th grade level. :hmmm:

I notice that she talks all about how to pay her, but doesn't give her phone number. Anyone who expects payment without giving you a phone number so you can talk to them personally is a scammer.

As Dante said, who actually falls for this stuff?

I got another reply earlier... this just keeps getting better and better....

Here it is:

"
The car is already at the shipping company in Saint Augustine, FL ready for shipping.
I have a contract with eBay so this deal must go through eBay Vehicle Protection Program.
I'm very busy with my job and I'm out of town ( i am doctor in US Army , deployed in Afghanistan now ) so I can't meet you in person , this is the reason why I chose to sell my car on the Internet. According with the eBay you have 5 days after you receive the car to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not.
Here is how it will work:
1.First of all I will need the following details from you:
- Full Name
- Full Shipping Address
I already have your info.
2. After I will receive the details from you, I will forward them to eBay.
3. After they will process your info, they will send us both invoices. You will receive the invoice with the details on how to make a refundable payment.
4. eBay will contact me and I will ship the car to you. After you receive the car you will have 5 days to test, verify and do whatever you need to the car. If you will decide to buy, then I will get money from ebay .
5. If you will decide that you do not buy the car, eBay will refund your payment and I will contact shipping company to pick up my car from your address . If you wish to make the transaction, please send me the necessary info so that we can proceed. I look forward to hearing from you .Just let me know if you agree and i will initiate the transaction through ebay

Thank you"

---------------------------

Soooo..... I wrote back again and said, yes I want it.... Here's the "EBAY" transaction information I got; This was not in Jpeg form, I had to copy it out of the email:

So thats where this will end as far as I go. I just was curious how these scammers actually con people into sending them money. It looks somewhat authentic to ebay, but there is no link to ebay; no reference number that will work on an Ebay site, plus NO OPTION FOR PAYPAL - Since Ebay owns PayPal now, they LOVE it when you use PayPal (cause they get a cut of the sale), so yes, its 10000000% fraud.

BEWARE

Typical.

I wonder if anyone reads the advice in BIG BOLD LETTERS on craigslist? It says

[ OFFERS TO SHIP CARS ARE 100% FRAUDULENT ]

It takes you to a scams page:

about > scams
Personal Safety Tips craigslist help forum

You can sidestep would-be scammers by following these common-sense rules:

* DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON - follow this one simple rule and you will avoid 99% of the scam attempts on craigslist.
* NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service - anyone who asks you to do so is a scammer.
* FAKE CASHIER CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS ARE COMMON, and BANKS WILL CASH THEM AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE when the fake is discovered weeks later.
* CRAIGSLIST IS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY TRANSACTION, and does not handle payments, guarantee transactions, provide escrow services, or offer "buyer protection" or "seller certification"
* NEVER GIVE OUT FINANCIAL INFORMATION (bank account number, social security number, eBay/PayPal info, etc.)
* AVOID DEALS INVOLVING SHIPPING OR ESCROW SERVICES and know that ONLY A SCAMMER WILL "GUARANTEE" YOUR TRANSACTION.

I saw the same type of scam involving a different product on craiglist, got a bunch of nonsense about guarantee and how I could not pick it up in person, etc etc. Uh huh... sure sure.

I have a feeling its not a 'her' at all - If you look on the pic I posted, it shows it going to some guy in NYC. I'm just gonna leave my contact with him/her where its at - Anyone else; feel free to email 'it'! :)

Also; the 'links' to ebay support didn't go anywhere except 'invoice@transactionebaymotors.com'.... shady.

"100% Documentation, Even has the first owner shaking hands with the dealer." Bahahahaa.
If that wasn't enough.
"This car wasn't washed for the first 15 years of its existence." BAHAHAHA.
So someone loves this car enough to garage it for 23 years and have "security"? but they wont wash it after 4k miles. Bahaha this is hillarious.
"original tires are Good Year Eagle " Nope they are not. They were Gatorbacks. Man this is great, its like someones retarded ten year old niece is trying to scam people.

I've had a couple of acquaintances fall for those scams.. it's sad but... funny! lol!

It's always the bad grammer and everything else... Good stuff!

Technically... "Gatorbacks" read "Goodyear Eagle VR 50" or "Goodyear Eagle ZR 50" depending on the year. "Gatorback" is just one of the marketing tools that Goodyear uses and applied to the tires. To say they're Goodyear Eagles is as accurate as to say they're Gatorbacks. Just to clarify. :2cents:

they do this with boats vettes horses trailers snowmobiles motorcycles guns airplanes etc. what they do is copy a real posting from ebay taking the original pictures and creating a scam around it using craigs list. so somewhere at sometime someone listed that camaro on ebay and the african scammers stole the info and pics.

Oh well now i feel just silly.
But on another note, i dont think driving on 20+ year old tires, (even if they were garaged with security) would be safe. Thanks Drew

hahaha. I emailed the seller at each posting to see if I could buy it 4 times. I used a different email address each time. I just want to see what happens. And for the fun of it, I sent a email to craigs list to see what they have to say about this. I shudder to think how many fell for this scam.

Nah, you're fine. If you've never seen a set, you'd never know. The F-body community isn't nearly as concerned about 100% accurate cars. Some other forums place more importance on things like original tires. 15" Gatorbacks are in some demand to Mustang and Fiero owners. In my experience, Goodyear makes the worst tires available. My 87 had the original VR 50's on the front with 50,000 miles when we got it. It drove 100% better after a fresh set of BFG Comp T/A's. The Eagle GA's on my TBI convertible will spin all the way through first with a little coaxing. I've had a few different sets of Goodyears (GSC's, RS-A's) on the back of my Formula and they were traction deficient until 3rd gear. I've got a set of older Eagles on the back of my 4cyl Mustang currently, and they don't hook either. About the only thing 20 year old Goodyears are good for is mounting on a mint set of wheels and swapping them on at car shows.

I just got the same letter sent to me that was posted here a little while back. I asked to see the car in person in Dallas Tx and that I will have cash money. I know they will never show. I just had to see what the deal is. It would be a great deal if it were true. I do have the cash and would buy it, after I had the VIN run by a cop friend of mine and it came back clear ( none of witch will ever happen)

Re: Craigslist ad; 87 IROC CONVERTIBLE w/ 4400 miles.... Less than $5k????

What you should do is find a way to scam them. :D
Read a post about a year ago from a dude selling his laptop. Scammer wants to "buy" it outside ebay, and sends a check. Guy mails off a "laptop". The check bounces (expected), but the scammer has to pay duty fees on the value of his $2000 laptop. Still, not a bad deal at ~$100, until he opens the box and finds a big pile of cow poo.

I was playing them for awhile and got the same emails. I contacted them regarding the Atlanta ad and said that I was going to be in Atlanta over the weekend and if I could see the car. I then was told that the car is already in St Augustine at the shipping location. I responded back that that was perfect as I was going thru St Augustine to get home. I asked for the address and number of the shipping company so I can stop and see the car. I told them I would probably buy it while there and that I could trailer it home, saving them on shipping costs. They replied back stating that they are under contract with eBay for purchases to the car. I told them that wasn't a problem either as I have my laptop and can use the eBay pay feature on the spot and still take the car home. My inbox has heard only crickets since then.
