LEGO 3rd Gens

Not sure where to post these, but here are some models I built of various 3rd gen Camaros. Each has detailed interiors and engine compartments, working suspension and steering, and opening hood, doors, and rear hatch. I do not currently provide instructions for my models, so please don't ask. Be aware these models are around 1500+ pieces, and would cost about $200 to build.

Wow! Nice work!

I've toyed with the idea of using one of my 8880 sets to build my '90 T/A, but never got around to it. I never imagined it would look nearly as good as your builds d.

I even built my own 1983 Camaro Z/28, both how it looked when I first bought it (orange on right) and how it looks now with the 4th gen interior (burgundy on left);

I even tried to keep the interiors authentic. Here's the 1987 Camaro IROC-Z;

Re: LEGO 3rd Gens

I need to make more pics of the Berlinetta, 1LE, and IROC Championship car yet, but will post them once I have. The links above will lead to my MOCPages account with more pics of each car, and also to my Flickr account.

At present I don't have the means to physically build any of these, so they exist only in the digital realm as 3 dimensional models, using LEGO Digital Designer. I can compile a parts list and see if they can be built out of real bricks, but be aware as I said above that they will be quite expensive based on the amount of parts needed alone. I also have Fox body and SN-95 Mustang models, and Mk1 MR2s, as well as numerous aircraft.

Re: LEGO 3rd Gens

Nice work! Do you have the ability to shorten the tail section by two 'rows'? It just looks too long. I figured the length might be determined/limited by the size of the pieces that you're using for the rear glass. I think they make some different sized 'windshield' pieces that could be turned on their sides and converted into a rear glass. either way, good work!

Re: LEGO 3rd Gens

Thanks, and not really. I did a LOT of engineering on these, but most of what you're seeing is the fact that the wheels are between the equivalent of 13"-14" rims. LEGO doesn't have a midsize wheel between that and their huge ones, so I was stuck with those or with 30" monsters. It's a trade off, but I think I went with the right decision. If they add more wheels to their selection I'll go back and redesign it again. My models are never really "done".

As for the hatch glass, windshield pieces wouldn't work based on the sheer scale of this. The largest piece they make would be swallowed in that hatch area. That said, producing these in real bricks is difficult because they don't make some of the elements in the colors I've used (or at least don't currently produce them). The hatch glass transparent parts is a good example of this. I would probably have to convert it to all black to actually build it, so the tinted look it is I guess!

You should post these on Lego's website. They have a suggestion system for new models.

They're on the LEGO.com site in the galleries, just not on LEGO Ideas. They're too big (number of elements) to make it through the selection process realistically, and it would take every member here voting on it just to make it to the 10,000 vote selection process. Most struggle to make it to 500 in the 1 yr time frame you're given. Even then, it gets voted on again by LEGO to decide which set they choose to produce, based on a host of factors such as production cost, price point, worldwide marketability and recognition, and licensing costs. There is a beautiful 1967 Corvette Stingray on there now that has every right to be a LEGO set, but honestly I don't think the chances are that great for it.

Go right ahead, I love seeing how others solve engineering problems with LEGO. I would post the Mustangs I made here but I'm sure some in the TGO crowd would get their panties in a bunch if I did. That said, here's some of my work;

Re: LEGO 3rd Gens

Those seem to be 5th gen actually. I'm not as big a fan of Technic builds. I appreciate them for the skill involved, and a lot of the mechanical features, but I don't like their aesthetics. They look a lot more "unfinished" to me.

I know this is an old post, but just coming across it! Great work! Very detailed and meticulous. Love them! Ironically my 3rd gen was a 1983 Z-28 black on gold f5-speed with T tops! and my son does a 1991 white Z-28! Do you still make or sell these? Thx!

Re: LEGO 3rd Gens **UPDATE**

Working on plans to build these currently. 1/12 scale 1987 Camaro IROC-Z, 16" long and fully detailed. Can be built as white with black/red or black/silver stripes, black with black/blue or black/silver stripes, red with black silver stripes, or blue with black/silver stripes. Optional T-top or hardtop. Plans will be available on Rebrickable, planning on asking $15 and will include downloadable decal sheet for the door "IROC-Z" , rocker and rear bumper "Z28" emblems, "TUNED PORT INJECTION" rocker and rear bumper script, and nose "CAMARO" emblem. Have almost entirely reworked the model with newly available parts to achieve a much more accurate look overall. Parts count is over 2600, and depending on color can run upwards of $350 to source everything needed through Bricklink.com (red and blue versions being more expensive, also the silver striped versions). Bear in mind I am supplying the building instructions and decals download ONLY, no parts.

No offense to your earlier designs but these new ones look WAY better!
The proportions and aesthetics are now pretty much spot on. Super cool.
Now do a 1984 Trans Am for me!

Love it! Have you considered uploading it to the Lego Ideas page? They recently released a '69 Z28 so they already carry the Chevrolet license, it'd be awesome to get a thirdgen in there, even if it's just the speed champions scale.

I have, but if I do I can't offer the plans also. It's kinda one or the other. Since the likelyhood of them actually producing it as a kit is fairly low, it'ld be more accessable for people if go the Rebrickable route. It'ld be nice to sell enough to cover the cost of building my own, and I have hundreds of hours in this model already.

LEGO finally released larger wheels and a few new pieces that helped to revamp a lot of issues with the earlier design. I still had to use one less than ideal piece on the rear quarter of the blue version due to color limitations, but worst case scenario can provide a covering decal for that one piece on each side to hide it. Maybe the correct color will also be released to outright replace it also!

I had a hell of a time fitting everything under a Camaro hood, a more sloped Firebird hood would just be, oof! 🫣 But gimme time, I'll play with solutions.
