1992 Purple Haze z03 z28 just purchased

Picked up this car right before Christmas , it's a 5.0 5sp tpi , has the g92 option but obviously t tops added after it left the factory . Car has been repainted some time and stripes are painted on , this would be my 8th third gen , but 1st tpi 5 speed . I don't see very many of these , brings back memories of some of my other Irocs I have owned . Would this one be rated at 230 or 235 hp , and what would have been the last month they were made ?

August of 1992 was the last month for the 1992 Camaro and Firebird.

Yours shows a build date of 06/24/1992

Very interesting car. It was built 3 days before the last one was built Aug. 27th I believe it was before the plant shut down. No CC1 for ttops and it doesn't look like cars and concepts ttops either. Looks like the factory ttops. Could of been another aftermarket company that did the conversion for the factory look possibly. This combo was rated 230 hp

It has I believe factory glass tops , my friends 89 iroc tops fit it , and are the same glass tops that he has . I have had mostly hard tops , so this is my first time around tops that were added later . Don't have much info as I bought it from a collector that had known the second owner for 15 years or more . It has 41xxx miles , but looks as the first owner drove it for 38,xxx miles as it started off life new . Second owner did not drive it very often .

Very Nice grab. I think it's pretty rare car since it has very low miles and is a Z03. I saw this car on craigslist and called and it was gone.

If you can, post a picture of the t-tops etched labels, we could see if they were possibly a matched set, & when they were made.

It was built on June 24, not August 24. 2 months and 3 days before the last car.

Nice car! I've always liked the purple 92's, because you don't see many.

Those sure look like factory ttops to me also. Not many people would go through that much trouble to install factory ttops..
Just wondering, does the spid VIN match the cars VIN? Has anyone ever seen a SPID mistake like this?
Cool car !

Congrats on the purchase. Beautiful color.

The spid does not show rpo CC1 for t-tops. It must be aftermarket.

The tops look to be OE, but there's nothing to say that someone didn't get a roof off a salvage yard car and have it grafted into a hardtop by a body shop.

Just from looking at the pics, the ttops are not correct for a 92. The weatherstripping is wrong, and I'd expect a 92 would have Lexan originally. Of course at this point, it's not unlikely they would have been changed out for a glass set. It's a shame the Lexan ttops didn't wear any better. If they held up as well as glass they'd be a superior choice.

Re: 1992 Purple Haze z03 z28 just purchased

OP. if you're curious about the ttops possibly being added after the car was bought then take a few pics of the A pillars where they meet the cowl under the hood. See if it looks like someone was in there. Look for seam sealer that doesn't match the rest of the car. Look for non factory looking welds. You can also check the seam along the top of the rear hatch glass where the hinges are as well as the metal on the B pillars. You'd have to pull the speakers and padding out to get to the back side of the B pillar/quarter panel.

I have never heard of GM making a mistake on a SPID sticker. So either the SPID doesnt match the VIN of the car or someone cut the hardtop off and replaced it with a Ttop roof.

If it was replaced then you should really inspect it over and make sure the job was done correctly.

Meh... Check the VIN matches the one on the spid, if it does, than someone did some cut and splice. But what's done is done, if it hasn't broken in two, it's probably fine. Weld in some good subframe connectors (which you should do anyway) and let er buck. Not like you can really do anything about it now anyway. -Shrug-

Whoever did the conversion did an awesome job though just looking at it. Not to say it couldn't of been done in a shady way but it looks a heck a lot better than the cars and concept tops. Never liked the look.

Re: 1992 Purple Haze z03 z28 just purchased

The vin matches the spid , didn't think it was factory , just haven't seen the cars and concepts tops that I remember .The top could have been changed , they fit great and no visible signs of shoddy work done . I have some small things I want to do to the car , but overall it's in good shape for my expectations of a 1992 car . Thanks for all the info , I know there are a lot of great information around here . I have had 8 third gens mostly newer cars at the time , this is the first one I have had in a while , and the first 5.0 spd tpi . All my others have been 5.7 and g92's , except for a 5sp lg4 z28 that I got new in 85 as a teenager .

Yup, whoever installed the roof did a killer job.
Pull off a few parts to see where they did the splicing.
Has me interested!

When the weather gets a little better around here I will dig into it some more and post what I find . We just had snow and 20 degree weather here in south ga , I'm used to almost year round ttop weather here .

BIGMODS and I swapped his T-top car over to a hard top. With proper technique and attention to detail, it can be done and no one would be the wiser. It's really not that hard honestly.

Sorry for the delayed response.

Glass dates are: April 1988 & May 1988 respectively. Most likely a matched set. Might be little early to be original 89 glass, but possible if it was a very early car? Not sure when production started for 89. Others will know ;)

If your interested, post the other glass labels too, Would be interesting to see if they are all in the same time frame.
Really just need the two alpha digits spaced L&R above the bottom row.
