Nice car. I like it.

Probably not original tires though. 39K miles on Gatorbacks with any tread left seems unlikely. Still cool is has Gatorbacks on it though, but i’m Sure they are old and need to be replaced.

Can anyone confirm if the z28 verts came with the 245 Gatorbacks or the 235 Eagle GA’s?

My 92 Z vert came with Eagle GA's, as I thought ALL 91 & 92 verts did.
I dont think you could get Gatorbacks on a 91 or 92 vert

Nice! I think those are the same folks who are selling the '88 that they still call an '89, black IROC, vert on eBay.

Doesn’t look bad and the price is sweet..

Is the passenger door supposed to have a VIN sticker?

My buddy's mom had this car when we were in high school in 1993. It was a 1991 Z28 and had like 6k miles on it when she got it. And it had the 235 Eagle GA tires.

So for everyone responding to this thread.....that thinks this car (with 39,000 miles) for $12K is a "good deal".....

What do you think a "good deal" would be for a 92 Z/28 with 13,000 miles ???

Just curious what your thinking on price as I just sold this one to a private collector that has an incredible group of third gen's
(several with under 150 miles and many still in the shipping plastic).....

Re: nice 39k mile 91 z28 conv.. 11,995

My thought is that a clean car like that should sell in the upper $20k range. Now, I know there are many here that will say they can find them and may buy them in the mid to upper teens, but that doesn't change the fact that some have a higher value and will follow book value over what the market is saying. Years ago, the market was driving prices higher than the book value. Today, I think the book value is higher than the market and only certain cars will sell at the book value.

My guess is $22k. I think the Z’s sell for a little less than the IROCs.

I agree Scott, currently it is looking as though book value (such as the Hagerty value guide, etc) is indeed higher than the true market values.
I think some of their "sales data" is taken from the auctions, such as BJ and Mecum, which we all know is not all that good of a true
"market" value. I expected to get exactly what you guessed ($20K or so) but ended up taking less, mostly because I needed the garage space
and did not want to go rent a storage unit for it while I waited for a higher offer.

Nice job Ray!

I thought this is around what you paid for it and figured you were selling to a collector with some extra fun money so maybe you made a few bucks.. (Maybe you got haggled the asking price and still made out!)

Really nice car.. surprised it didn’t stick around longer, but it ain’t no Formula..

I think you could have gotten $22 for it..

Nope, this one was pretty much for a "collector" and not a driver (you could have done that with it, but I never would have)
I had 3 different private collectors make offers, they did not know each other (that I know of) and they all came in with offers
within a few hundred $$$ of each other - that pretty much told me what the market would bear for this car.

BTW - these guys all had third gens in their collections with under 200 miles.
One guy has third gens with under FIFTY miles with the plastic still on the seats and had never even been dealer prepped.
These cars are out there guys, often times owned by individuals that do not belong to this (or any other) forum and remain totally silent!

Would you consider the car posted a driver? You said you would not make the 92 into one. My point is that from the pics both cars look they are in very good condition. Both look to be all original, Neither I feel is more desirable than the other. The difference is mostly in the miles, around 25K different. I see 2 different markets here, the collector and the driver. The collectors Biz is talking about probably would not look at this car posted. Collectors seem to like only low mile examples and are willing to pay more for a car just like Biz described above.
The car guys out there would never pay the top dollar for a car they would be afraid to drive, They will be willing to pay a little more for something that is in good shape, but not the premium price a collector example would bring. 2 completely different markets with 2 distinct price ranges of similar vehicles separated only by the smiles enjoyed along the way.

IMHO both of these are good deals, one is not a "better" deal than the other, it is simply a matter of what suits you. For a guy like me I will take the white one for 11K Ray! Although I like the color combo of Biz's vert better.

I think Biz documents and gets really good pics of underside, exterior and interior. I can see why a collector would want such a clean Vert with not a spec of rust (rare for these cars).

Thanks, for me, the underside tells the whole story of the car, it's always the first thing I request from the seller.
Here is a couple pics of cars I've owned. If the underside is not super clean, it's not for me

This is exactly my point. Why would a collector not want the car posted? I looked at the post and absent of an underside pics (so lets assume it is clean as a whistle) it is presented very well,. close up shots and all. I am trying to compare cars, not sellers. I feel "collectors" would just see miles and turn the page on this car and by this criteria collectors would just feel the car posted is worth less. I feel that the car posted in the original thread is a steal for the car guy. I feel Biz's car is a good deal, to a collector. 2 markets distanced my miles!

Vinny - IMO, you are correct - the car that is the topic of this thread would generally not be on the radar of a private collector.
In my experience, finding one with a super clean underside is difficult, I'd never assume the underside is as you say "clean as a whistle"
as it's usually just the opposite.

Re: nice 39k mile 91 z28 conv.. 11,995

I’d argue if the white car is as clean as Biz’s car and they can prove it, they could get more than the asking price there.

I’d prefer a clean underside to low miles.

My car has no rust anywhere underneath. Aside from the factory or dealer undercoating the original owner got on the car I have pics that look like the ones Biz put above. I saw a guy who had a 3000 mile IROC 5-speed that he got a good deal on because some lady put it outside for years after her husband died. The new owner did a budget respray that had a lot of orange peel and didn’t do the car justice and the underside was orange with rust.

I wouldn’t trade my clean 88 for that 3000 mile car even if he gave me $5k on top of it. I was appalled when I looked under there.. When I first saw the car I assumed it was 103,000 but then the owner showed me all this documentation and told the story of the car.. That car needs to be restored.

If you want to get good money for your car and sell fast, show off how clean it is under there. The Vanguard guys do a good job of showing the cars online I have to say.

There was a red 92 Vert I believe with Black stripes on eBay a while back with 30k miles but looked like a 5k mile car. I’d bet it was as clean with 30k miles or cleaner than that 344 mile IROC that we never got to see underneath..

I get skeptical of super low mile cars when they don’t show off the underside..

Many on here have said judge the car on the condition, not the miles..

I see cars with 100k miles in better shape than 30k mile cars.

I thought of your car when I was reading this. I am sure you got a great deal on your car because of the miles. You have turned your car into one any collector would be proud to own. But in your opinion, do you think it is worth top dollar or do you think the miles and the respray will hurt you? Not that you want to sell the car.

I never cared about selling it. The guy that painted my car paints cars worth $500k-$1million so I’d laugh at a collector that would say my repaint devalued the car. You have to wait for a year to get your car painted by the guy I used. He just repainted a real “non kit” Shelby Cobra that was signed by Carroll Shelby for the second time because the owner got chips on it. He doesn’t just call it a repaint or respray, but a restoration paint job. That Cobra travels around and wins awards but the guy likes driving it too. Said he paid about $900k for it.

I knew I wouldn’t enjoy the car as much with the original paint. I wanted the car to glow and look amazing in any light from any angle. My underside still needs to be detailed, I never got around to that, but it will look good when it’s done. It’s just dusty underthere and there’s some cobwebs, etc..

I consider 30k pretty low miles and in the collector world for many classic cars that’s the case, but the fact that there’s a bunch of Thirdgens with under 1,000 miles out there I suppose gets the collectors to hold out for those and hope they have the combination of a clean car that runs and drives with low miles.

I wanted a combination of a low-ish mile clean show car that I wasn’t super terrified to take out and cruise around our coastal area and go to cruise nights and shows. I wanted the nicest car I could get for under $20k with the options, color, etc. I wanted an 88-89 IROC Vert in Black or Flame.

They did let me bump the insurance value to $30k and when I first got the car they said the max they could do was $20k. Partially because the paint was restored and I sent the receipts and pictures to document. Didn’t raise the premium too much.

Based on the attention the car gets and the praise the paint job gets, I’d say the value increased and in a showroom I think it could hold its own next to a original paint time capsule. You could look with a magnifying glass and there’s no evidence of overspray anywhere and the paint matches the jams perfectly.

I will argue for repaints, because done right I think it’s a value add, but you have to be in the $10k paint job range. If my original paint was as nice as scottmoyer’s IROC I may not have done it.

I dont think I could sell the car for the insurance value, but I’ve gotten offers for $22k to sell which is almost double what I paid. A guy that goes to all the cruise nights and always brings different classics from his collection gave me his card and said “nicest IROC I’ve seen anywhere up here, $22k if you want to sell, here’s my card”

Again, though I didn’t buy it to sell it. I’m working on making it look like a 100 mile car, but that I can drive around. It’s just for me and my strange love of IROCs though.

Re: nice 39k mile 91 z28 conv.. 11,995

It’s crazy and he said the guy with the Cobra is kinda crazy.. but his exact words were, “This guy bought this car for $900k and I’ve repainted it twice because he got chips on it and it has to be meticulous because he gets it inspected and appraised, but also wants to drive it..”

A kit Cobra can run $40-60k

A real one like the one next to my IROC in his shop can go for over a million..

That car actually bumped mine in line as well..

He also restored a 63 split window and just sold it to a collector for $160k and that car was there when I was in there.. said he got the car in rough shape for $60k and did a flawless nut and bolt numbers matching resto..

He said he’d sell me the Vette for $125 if I wanted it..

He’s restored and repainted 1953 Corvettes worth over $500k

He’s known for Corvettes mostly but his showroom is full of low mile collector cars that people want restored to perfect looking factory paint..

There was a 15k mile Grand National from Florida that a guy wanted redone just like my IROC.. He said he’s been getting more 80s cars the past few years..

I also got bumped by a 70 Chevelle SS that was an older restoration and the guy wanted nicer paint done..

He had some $20-30k custom paint jobs I saw but not my style at all.. very impressive..

or.. I was in a room full of claybar residue.. you decide.. ha ha

He had some $20-30k custom paint jobs I saw but not my style at all.. very impressive..

or.. I was in a room full of claybar residue.. you decide.. ha ha

Pretty cool stuff !!!
I'm sure he appreciated the claybar comments :D

He thought my IROC was “cool” and told me people asked him if it was for sale several times when it was sitting in his showroom, but he kinda commented that he didn’t understand with cars worth hundreds of thousands next to it why they’d give a crap about an IROC.. I was like gee, thanks!

He also told me a story about how he saved a bunch of money and bought a brand new loaded 84 Z28 in 1984 and he was king of the neighborhood and then the 85 IROC came out and one of his neighbors got one and he was so pissed.. So IROCs always kinda bothered him after that..

Thanks buddy! I like your current fleet !!
If I had owned a huge climate controlled storage facility, I could have kept them....
I have fun locating, buying, fixing and/or detailing then selling....

I think you are achieving your goal Joe!
