1989 Camaro Steering Column Issues

I bought a 1989 Camaro from a small tow company that was a stolen and recovery. Somebody told us that it's a one year only car for parts. Found out that the tow guy wanted to make the car nicer for buyer, but he put in a 1986 Steering Column and it hasn't been able to run since he put in the column. He since then has thrown the 89 column away. The comp keeps throwing the VATS code up when tested. Bought a ignition from Kragens with the orange and white wiring and pluged it in but still doesn't run. have had this car for about 10 months now and really want to be able to drive it. It is a 1989 IROC Z28 5.7L Tuned Port Injection Camaro

Any sugestions on how to get this car running?

Re: 1989 Camaro Steering Column Issues

Assuming that it is only they vats you have a couple of choices. You can find the orange sheathed witing for it under the dash by the column and one at a time try different resisters to get it to crank. This is a slow process as you do not have the original key. You can put in a VATS bypass at the computer or you can have the chip in the computer reprogrammed for VATS delete.
If you ran all the new wires up the column for the VATS ignition and you got a resistor to work then you could get a new key made for that resistance.
Try a search on here for VATS bypass and you will find many threads explaining this further.
