Ultima Seat Pump Seized (GTA 1989) Hi Everyone, I'm restoring my 1989 GTA and have a problem with the air pump used for inflating the lumbar and bolster supports for the Ultima seats. I've tracked it down to the air pump - it has seized. I've removed it from the pump box (that contains both the electric motor and the pump mechanism) - and the shaft will not turn. I've confirmed that with the pump removed, the electric motor spins correctly for inflate and deflate. Has anyone every encountered the pump being seized? I'm hesitant in spraying anything into the pump - likewise using force to try and turn the shaft. Please see the pictures attached. Any ideas? Many thanks - Ken https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...111b2cf538.jpg Pump with shaft (top) https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...7f8071f500.jpg Pump (bottom) |
Re: Ultima Seat Pump Seized (GTA 1989) Hi Everyone, With some electrical joint lubrication spray sprayed into the top holes (air in and outlet) and gentle turning with pliers, I managed to free up the pump to the point that it would turn by me using my fingers on the shaft to turn it. Re-assembled with the motor and the pump is again operational. The electrical lubrication spray seemed to do a nice job of providing the lubrication without any oil residue. The grey powder on the surface of the bottom of the pump is from the aluminum plate used to hold the pump against the motor. Hope this helps someone else in the future. Best regards, Ken. |
Re: Ultima Seat Pump Seized (GTA 1989) Nice work. I was going to post earlier, you may be the only one to ever really mess with the pump at that level. Honestly it is something most people overlook. A lot of time when people sell the seats they don't sell the crossover harness with them and renders the seats useless for the bolster and lumbar. I have read people say those seats are uncomfortable, and I suspect they aren't adjusting them, or are unable to. |

Maybe I will fab some seat extensions next summer so I can pull the seat a little more backward, guess that will help with my legs. |
Re: Ultima Seat Pump Seized (GTA 1989) So the ultima seats on my '91 both function as far as I hear the pumps run under the seat , but neither seat feel like its changing the lumbar & bolster positions. Any ideas what to look for? |
