Question on removing the instrument cluster from 89 Trans Am? Trying to do the odometer gear fix on a TA, I have the clear plastic off the cluster. Do I remove the gauges from the white cluster piece at this point, just leaving the odometer, or do I remove the entire cluster / white plastic compartment as a whole with all of the gauges still intact? Once the entire compartment is out, then remove the odometer.... And yes, detect the cable at the back before removing either way. I find tons of posts for a Camaro, which it appears the gauges in it just push into tabs on the white compartment...the TA appears to have a film the gauges push into from part/pics I see on eBay and such. Thanks |
Re: Question on removing the instrument cluster from 89 Trans Am? Your 89 should be electronic with no speedometer cable. You'll need to remove the entire cluster from the car. There are several 7mm bolts that come out and the whole cluster will pull out. Once out, remove all of the gold screws and the clear plastic and black shroud will come off. To remove the odometer assembly, look for 3 silver screws directly behind it on the backside of the cluster (this holds the circuit board), then 3 gold screws which hold the speedometer assembly in also on the back side of the cluster. From this point, the whole assembly and circuit board lifts right out and you are ready to begin. See the how to step by step instructions on the odometer gears website and a member alan91z28 how to on this thread:https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...ken-but-2.html |

Yes, that is the thread that lead me to find the solution for the gears and purchased a set, I have the instructions from their website but could not find anything on how the cluster comes out in a TA and feared I might break something trying to pull it out...you know how things that have been together for 30 years tend to stick together and need a little pry to get apart! Thanks Again! Will be trying to do the rest of this over the weekend. |
Re: Question on removing the instrument cluster from 89 Trans Am? Don't forget to unscrew the trip odometer peg, if you don't, you could break the cover plastic lens, which can be quite fragile. It has a head on it that just unscrews just like a screw would.... |
Re: Question on removing the instrument cluster from 89 Trans Am? Yep, its already off along with the clear lens, that is where I stopped yesterday and posted not being sure how the rest comes out! Thanks |

Re: Question on removing the instrument cluster from 89 Trans Am? https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...db1b6afcd9.jpg NOW yer dun.... Turn the pod back over and gently pull the head and the electronic package out... |
Re: Question on removing the instrument cluster from 89 Trans Am? Awesome, great pics! ...not quit dun...I think the install of that little gear and the drill/tap and assemble part make get the best of me :( |
Re: Question on removing the instrument cluster from 89 Trans Am? Just curious, do you have a pic of the entire back of the cluster? Just wondering how all of the circuitry is connected to the wires behind the dash..how they connect to the circuit board. |

Yes, exactly! Interesting, no wiring harness plug to disconnect, just those push in tab things. Thanks so much for the pics! But it does. |
Re: Question on removing the instrument cluster from 89 Trans Am? Now that you have the gage pod out it is a good time to clean up the electrical terminals. Take a pencil eraser and gently clean the tabs on the green screen, and clean the electrical terminals in the connectors at the dash. |
Re: Question on removing the instrument cluster from 89 Trans Am? I didn't get the gauge cluster out today, got busy with some other things while it was nice outside for once...hope to get it out one day after work this week and start on the odometer fix. Everything is super clean, car only has 28k miles but will check out the connections. |
