new stall converter

what kind of stall converters is everyone using on their ls1 swaps? what stall also?

i've been talking to a lot of different companys about getting one built, and they all want me to go with a 4000 stall, with around a 2.4str. anybody running that much stall here? the biggest i've ever drove in a ls1 car was a yank 3500, but that was a cam'd only car.

do you think 4000 would be to much?
:)

4000rpm stall speed would be pretty miserable to drive on the street.

The best compromise I found back when I had an auto trans was the PI Vigilante. I had mine set up for ~2600-2800rpm stall speed and it was great. Didn't wind the engine up on part-throttle acceleration, but at WOT it really let the engine spin up fast.

well the yank 3500 was in my 99 ws6, with a mid sized cam. it didnt feel slushy at all either. but 4000 seems like so much more:(

Kandied91z 07-21-2005 12:51 AM

wow that's alot. i had 3200 in my last setup and 3200 with the ls1 unit and it works well. i couldn't imagine much more but i've been wondering the same myself. recently did a rocker, rod, lt header and converter change with some tunning and found a 70 horse increase on a base c5 which i'm getting ready to duplicate. the stall was a 3500 though so i'm not sure myself if i want to go larger. i like that it's streetable right now.

pskel350 07-21-2005 05:44 PM

well im not sure i want to go that big either.....

but i cant find anyone around that has a cam as big as me with a 4000 stall to take a ride in. i loved my yank 3500, but that was a baby cam compared to the one in the camaro:D

what brand of converter are you using Jeff?

Kandied91z 07-22-2005 10:28 AM

i don't know, came with the trans and i can't id it...

:D

is this on a LS1?

4000 stall, no less.. my friends "4000" really stalls at 5200.... excelent stall.. with basic boltons and that stall, he got in the 11.7s and almost into the 11.6s before the seasons over.. stock internal, minimal weight reduction.

its his daily driver car, and ive personally seen and know theres over 70,000 miles on this converter. its reliable. when you floor it, it hits like you dumped a clutch... and best of all, because this is a computer controled trans, it locks up and drives normally..
the only wierd thing about it is its tone... mild acceleration is a constant RPM.. the engine doesnt ramp up with speed, it just holds steady.

if i ever get a auto LS1car (and i will eventually) one of the first mods will be a high stall. unlike with older cars it has zero drawbacks.. because of the PWM lockup clutch in the converter, your daily driving RPMs dont change

well finally had a free day at the shop to put in the 4000 stall. This thing is badass, feels so much nicer then my old yank. its a looser converter, but still very streetable.

i've done stall converters on a few 4th gen ls1's, but on a 3rd gen swap, its a major PITA, had to basically drop the trans all the way out, had to take the passenger side header off, and half the y-pipe off just to slide the trans back far enough... but it was worth it. hopefully be back on the dyno this week to get some new numbers. i highly recommend a 4000 stall with a H/C car:D

:burnout: :burnout: :burnout:

so you had the 3500 yank before and you didn't like it? any chance you'll be at the m event as it would be fun to compare the two cars.

pskel350 09-26-2005 10:06 PM

i had the yank in my 99 ws6 before i sold it. the yank was a nice converter, but at $800 it wasnt great. i paid 410 for the new one to my door, and the performance is better then the high dollar pieces.

i might have the car at M10, not real sure yet. are you bringing your lsx swap up there Jeff? have you been on the dyno yet?

Kandied91z 09-27-2005 02:54 AM

yeah but when i did i only had a ls6 intake, cold air with slp maf and custom lt's with the old 3" exhaust and it was 347 rwhp with the 19's so we'll see. i'm hoping to take it up there to do some test runs with 19's, 16's and a few cold air options i have before i change over to forced induction on the setup. beat the 91 up one last time before it goes under the knife. if i can pull low 13's with the 19's i'll be very happy.

1/2 the price and twice the gas mileage the lsx is so much fun.

i can understand about the converter though, the idea that spending more gets more isn't true any more. i've been hearing problems with yanks actually slowing cars down so i'm not sure what i'm going to do but the $730 vigilante sure didn't do much for me.

sounds like you have a healthy motor for that hp and minor mods. when i had my car on the dyno last time, it flat lined the a/f at 10, so we didnt make any full pulls with being afraid off washing the cylinder walls...at 3200 rpm we were seeing a touch over 400 rwhp though:cool:

if i can find some wheels for my dr's i will bring it to m10 probably:)

Kandied91z 09-28-2005 03:51 AM

nice, yes i'm very happy considering the motor when dynoed was completely stock as far as internals. the only bolt ons being the intake, exhaust and cold air which i don't see as being much.

considering the price of the conversion and everything it cost just at that point it well out weighed the last setup in reliability and gas mileage so i can do without the power numbers to be able to drive all day long for cheap. if i can get another 100 horse out of it with mild boost i'll be very content for the 91.
