90rs and a 95z
 

hey guys I was hoping to get some opinions, so I have a clean 90 RS, 305 tbi - 700r4 - runs better than both my parents new cars....but I digress point is its real clean. I also just purchased a semi built 95z28, ttops - cammed - rebuilt trans - alum. driveshaft - 4.10 gear w/ discs - pillar gauges -newer speakers - tv in the headrest, etc., but the body is iffy, interior has seen better days, and im not all that sure I want to fix it up now.

So what I'm trying to figure out is should I drop the cammed LT1, rebuilt trans, alum. DS, 4.10 geared rear combo in the RS, which I'd love too. Only problem is I need to make at least 1500 out of my old combo, and parting out the rest of this z28. Is this possible? or did I just screw myself....

BTW the reason I need to make the money back is BC I was originally going to fix it to sell, then decided to sell the RS and keep it, and now I'm trying to figure how I'm goint to get out of the sinkhole I'm falling into it seems like. (All on borrowed money...) Any opinions please?

Swap out the LT1, trans, gears etc( resevoirs, prop. Valves,seats). Then sell the body to help financially finish the swap. And have one hell of a nice ride.

Id sell off the 4th gen either as a whole (easiest) or piece by piece (more money)

I wouldnt start a project when you're in the hole. Disabling two cars with zero budget is never a good idea and leads to lawn ornaments

well one of them has to go, to get money back and at least break even, so either the 90 goes and ill have cash to fix the 95z or clean up the 95 sell it and have a little more cash in pocket...

Id still drop the 4th gen. The 305 TBI may be slow but its cheap and reliable. Two hard to find qualities these days

you asked for opinions so here goes

Hi, I borrowed money (if from your mom and dad then pay it back ASAP) so could buy a worn out 95 Z28. I have a perfectly fine 3rd gen but it has the 305 TBI that everyone on the forum hates. But, it runs and gets me from point A to point B.


Again, I have no money. My choices are to keep borrowing money from my folks and take one running vehicle, disable it, and try to swap in an old, disposition unknown LT1 into my current vehicle. I will then be able to hold my head with pride because I no longer have the 305 TBI.

I will then have a 305 TBI to sell, which I might be able to get $200 for on craigslist. I will also have a stripped 95 Z with terrible interior and exterior and might get $500 in parts from it.

So, my question is, should I borrow another $1,000 for all the needed incidentals to get the project done and after selling parts for $500, I will only be $2,000 in the hole?

Or, should I try and sell the Z to an unsuspecting teenager and wait until I'm more financially capable to take on the project?

Wow, that was more of a guilt trip then answering a question. Which you didn't yes I asked for an opinion but of what my best option would be to do. The 95z was originally bought to fix , resell and make a profit. But then decided we could sell the 90rs because its basically finished and just keep the 95z and mess around with that. But with some problems I have now since found I will most likely got to the original plan and try to clean it up some and sell for a profit. I'm just asking if anyone else has a suggestion of what I could do in this situation.

Dump the 95Z as a whole car, just unload it to someone else, it's more trouble than it's worth. You have a clean 90 RS to play with, even with the crappy 305 TBI, same as mine. :)

No guilt trip at all. It's more like clarity being given from the perspective only an older forum member can give. My answer was quite clear. You are not in a financial position ( as stated by you) to take on the project which will be a financial loss, not gain. Everything else beyond that is moot.

The end result could be a 3rd gen with a running LT1 but by the time you are done, and you add every nickel spent on the project, and then subtract the money you get back by selling parts, it will be a net sum loss.

That is what tends to always happen with vehicles with rare exceptions. (that's the caveat; rare exceptions)

Those of us who do this for passion and a hobby do it knowing it won't make us any richer.

So, get some clay bar, wax, armor all, cheap seat covers and detail that 95Z and find yourself a starry eyed teenager and see if you can recoup what you paid for it.

In a few years, when you are capable, you will still have the burning flame and passion and then can get yourself a project. Projects are so much more fun when you are not under any strict timeframe and you have the money to complete the project.

How to handle the complaints from the wife about the messy garage and when can she park there again; I can't help you with that ;)

If you don't have the extra cash don't attempt. Having a 4th gen parts car only solves half the problem, there is still ALOT more money to be spent.

well im might be getting a cheap firebird with all the parts I need and a great part out car so I can finish the 95Z and double my money at least

You're going to lose, with 3 cars in the yard.
