Looking Into An LT1 Swap

I Currently Have A 350 TPI And I Wanted To Swap It Out For An LS Engine But Now I'm Thinking Of Going With The LT1 Because It's Cheaper, Easier To Find, Seems Less Complicated To Swap And Can Still Make Good Power.

So People Who've Done This Swap How Are You Liking The LT1?

How Hard Is It To Do The Wiring And All That?

How's Gas Mileage?

If You Have Mods Can You Post What Mods You Did, The HP & Torque Numbers And 1/4 Mile Times?

Thanks!

Re: Looking Into An LT1 Swap

I just finished my swap its a blast I only have bolt ons due to budget but it's definitely worth the money. I'll get dyno numbers probably in may and quarter mile time when the track here opens. As for wiring it is pretty straight forward especially with all the info here. Don't get intimidated with it just step by step and you will find out its quite simple. I'm more than happy of how it turned out

Love my LT1, definitely do a cam while you're in there. I made my own LT1 thread, lots of pictures, including solutions for the power steering line and the use of the LT1 radiator and fans

When my LT1 was STOCK long-block w/ nothing but an off the shelf SBC Comp Cams XR270 OE roller cam( 218/224 @ 0.50), i made 347rwhp and ran mid 12's @ 112mph with no traction :D

Love LT1's

Wow that's the same cam I swapped in, I also did the LTCC conversion

Wow That's Bad ***! Is That With Ported Heads Or Just The Cam & Stock Heads Grinded Down To Handle The Lift?

I'm Also Looking Into This Cam Kit Once I Get The LT1. I Found A Shop In Compton That Can Machine My Heads For The Lift As Well, $250 For The Pair :)

Yup I Plan On Doing A Cam Soon After If Not Before, Would You Mind Posting The Link To Your Thread?

That was when my LT1 was a 100% stock motor straight out of a '95 T/A. I slapped the cam in there since I already had is laying around from an L98 I had with that cam in it. The heads were factory stock, never unbolted. The heads were never grinded down, I just upgraded all the valve train to Comp 977 w/ titanium 10* hardware, that was it.

I ported the heads and put an even bigger cam in later..now she's an 11 second all-motor 6-speed carb'd LT1

HEY IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE THAT CAN MOD MY WIRE HARNESS FOR ME AND I DO THE REST LIKE PLUG AND PLAY AND DROP MY MOTOR AND TRANS MY SELF IM EVEN WILLING TO PAY AFEW HUNDRED IM NOT BEING LAZY I JUST DON'T HAVE TYME

25th327RS 02-17-2013 08:44 PM

Re: Looking Into An LT1 Swap

You'll probably be hard pressed to get somebody to mod your harness into a plug and play for less that 450-500.

88_KaMaRo_KiDD 02-17-2013 08:51 PM

Re: Looking Into An LT1 Swap

Really?? 450/500 I can deal with honestly.....now 600 and up I cant so who and where do I get this job done and if I want to avoid this problem..with dishing out any money...what on my stock wire do I have to change to keep it

25th327RS 02-17-2013 08:59 PM

Re: Looking Into An LT1 Swap

What you change on the lt1 harness and/or the factory harness really depends on what you intend to retain as far as factory guages and such. If you are interested in doing your own harness, read the lt1 swap sticky and find the link for building a lt1 swap harness by pocket. A lot of things will become more clear and a lot of questions will be answered.

I know there are a few people doing harness since pocket stopped, just not sure who is, don't be surprised if you get some PMs with offers if you post up a thread asking. I have never done a lt1 harness, only a ls1 harness and two 0411 harnesses, but am confident I could. Do a lt1 harness without issue as well.

Yeah....I know I wrote him like the longest plea letter in the world about making videos. Of his work
and such but sadly my 4 page letter to the wire master was in vain I really wishing the the over seers of this forum will make a youtube channel and a facebook so more and more people will get involved but if u did a ls1 wire set up how much would u charge me I just need to know if u have a paypal I will pay u b4 I send the wire out I just wanna get it done.....im tired of my baby just sitting there :-(

If you are serious, PM me and we'll talk. I would still encourage to search out a few others as well, and be sure you are comfortable with who is doing your harness.

Re: Looking Into An LT1 Swap

We'll since u didn't a ls1 wire harness im willing to take the chance......on 1 condention.....if u have an account with youtube please by all means......post sum videos please.....lol if ima be dishing out sum money I would like to see ur work in the make please not just for me. But for future wiring underdawgs like my self so as I see ur work I will build up the nerve and it will help everybody else do it ur self after they see its not so hard cuz just seeing pictures and words alone are not enough 4 people 2 get the fear out of wiring there own harness I for 1 I know im scared.....scared that ima still cut the wrong wire and really **** sum **** up. SO WITH ALL THE WORDS AND PICTURES AND SLIDE SHOWS IT ISN'T ENOUGH THIS **** IS LIKE SCHOOL WE HAVE 2B SHOWN AS WELL AS READ BUT SHOWN.....WHEN WE SEE A WIRE HARNESS TORN DOWN IN THE MAKING WITH A GOOD QUALITY VIDEO.....I PROMISE U IT WILL KILL ALL OF THE FEAR IF U KNOW SUM GUYS THAT WILL DO IT PLEASE CONTACT THEM AND SPREAD THE WORD THINK ABOUT.....WE SEE IT DONE ON A VIDEO IT WILL CALM THE STORM....IF THE GUYS U TALK TO ARE WILLING 2 GET SUMBODY TO PAY THEM AND MAKE A LIVE FOOTAGE OF THERE WORK STEP BY STEP......WORD FROM WORD WIRE TO WIRE.....WHAT EACH WIRE IS FOR.....WHAT THeY CONNECT 2 HOW THEY RUN I PROMISE ALOT OF PEOPLE WILL BE AT EASE I FOR 1 WILL BE THE 1ST AND WONT BE THE LAST.....SEE U BEEN ON THIS
FORUM FOR A WHILE AND NOT 1 TYME U SEEN A POST ABOUT SUMBODY ASKING TO MAKE A VIDEO OF THERE WORK FOR EVERYBODY TO SEE NOT NO STUPID SLIDE SHOW BUT U INTRODUCING UR SELF THE NAME OF THE VIDEO ect....you guys say read....okay .....we read.....but it isn't enough........this past 4 months since I joined this forum 8 guys sold there camaros just cuz of the wiring post they red and still did it wrong....sad isn't it just what im asking im will 2 pay 4 ur work but are u willing 2 record ur work with detail and take the tyme to edit the film 4 others like my self 2 c

Re: Looking Into An LT1 Swap

U guys are dang near legends please by all means pick up where mr pocket left off at.....sum people have skills that others don't i have the skills to tear down an engine b4 I rewire it crazy huh?

Re: Looking Into An LT1 Swap

It's really not feasible to video document a harness build. That would add a crazy amount of time to actually completing the harness, not to mention, that video would ONLY be good for that year of car with that year of engine harness, With the exact same transmission and accessories kept, ect. It is extremely unlikely to have two engine harnesses be the exact same.

88_KaMaRo_KiDD 02-18-2013 06:14 AM

Re: Looking Into An LT1 Swap

And ur absolutely right but that's just the thing there are other engines that people have been tending to swap and all are fuel injection the L98,lt1,ls1,vortec 6.0 ect......the fact that u didn't say no leads me to believe that it might not be as crazy of a idea as others think see with the engines harness and ect that u don't have there are others that do each year has a different video if I could be in many places at once......I would do the recording while u guys do the work as u talk the people thru the process......since u done an ls1 swap. And soon im willing to send mine up that would be a start ......that would be the video u would do and to have to wiring harness at the same is sum what likely......cuz there is sombody else out there that's going thru this same problem but what's killing me about this wiring.....is the fact is how much more or how much less in the wiring will I have 2 do....example..............the stock wiring harness on an lt1...if I was to u use it what on that wire harness will I have to change how and where will I locate the particular wire I have to change and delete another.....example the guage and the sensors ani-theft those things even with a wiring diagram....sum people just don't get it how do I run those wires with out doing to much chopping and rethreading...

Re: Looking Into An LT1 Swap

If hes done an LS harness conversion, then he could do an LT harness. Its about taking your time, reading pinouts, and taking it step by step. Just because hes not jumping up and down raising his hand doesnt mean hes not willing to help. Dont make him prove his worthiness.

Theres tons of guys on here that CAN do harnesses, but incase you havent noticed it takes time, and is for most people, the worst part of the swap. Im sure Z28ricer or Pocket will chime in(both do great harnesses,Pocket did mine and ive seen a few from Z28ricer). Like 25th said, plan on dishing out some cash and wait a few weeks to a month.

Re: Looking Into An LT1 Swap

I understand learning by visuals, rather than reading material. It would just be very difficult to video document a harness build in a reasonable manner. I don't have the equipment or editing programs to even make a video as such, even if I did, just as much time would be spent editing film into a video as spent on the actual harness. And at that, not many people would be able to use the video to their particular swap. There is no "one way" to do a harness and almost every one will differ from any other. Maybe somebody would be happy to build a how-to video, its just not something I am personally interested in.

Print off the swap harness guides and take it with you to do your harnessing you decide to try it. It really helps to read the guide AS you are doing each particular step, a lot of stuff does make a lot of sense and be one clear when you have the visuals of your harness to co-incide with what you are reading.

Pocket, others, and I as well would answer any questions we can, but its just not for everyone. Most any other guides or videos would be a lot of re-peats of what Locke has already put out there for us.

Re: Looking Into An LT1 Swap

Theres no need to apologize man, im sorry if I came off as rude.. I was basically saying that alot of people here, either ASE mechanics or just the average guy, they all put hours under the hood and reading up on swap info. And if thats what youve been doing then your on the right track. But just know that if this is your first swap get all the parts you can before turning one bolt. Then plan on many hours in the garage. But IMO the swap is pretty strait forward and not alot to modify structurally.

And please dont call me sir, im only 22. lol

Well said. I wrote all of the articles while building a harness just to be sure not to leave out any issues that popped up. Im almost exclusively a visual learner, so I took a ton of pictures to document each step. I really dont see how anyone could video such a process and expect a viewer to sit down and watch the whole thing. Pop in "lord of the rings" and watch all of them, three times. Thats how long you'll be watching someone else build a harness. Doubtful

FWIW, LT1 wiring is very similar to LSx. Main differences are the low ref wires are grouped and there is only one coil. If someone can do a LSx, LT1s would be no problem
