am i losing it or did this change to "MY86Z28buildthread" from "MY86IROCbuildthread" find soemthing in the vin that says its not an iroc? or did you switch cars?

Re: My 1986 Z-28 build thread *PIC HEAVY*

Vin says it aint a IROC, The big IROC door stickers say that it is. I believe the VIN lol. hence the name change. I dont plan on putting any of the decal's or stripes back on it either. I also ordered emblems to badge it as what it is, a Z-28.

Also measured for a serpentine belt and picked on up, I am going to have to build a brace on the back of the vacuum pump mount as the belt is pulling it out of alignment.

I think the only real difference between the IROC and Z28 in 86 was the wonderbar and the 15 inch wheels vs 16 inch wheels.... But I think 86 is one of those weird years where you could get IROC wheels on a plain Z28? I cant remember exactly. And of course the Z28 got the colored ground fx.

Looking really good. I noticed a picture of a new fuel line and a mechanical fuel pump, whats your plans for your entire fuel system ?

No mechanical pump anymore, aeromotive a1000, bypass regulator, -10 feed w/ a -8 return. Stock sumped tank. Overkill on the engine but gives me lots of room to grow.

Last night I pulled the 9" apart so I weld on some LCARB's and paint the housing and calipers gloss black. I have ordered everything I need to put the rear end together including a Moser 31 spline spool, bearing kit, Daytona pinion support, Motive 4.11 gears, Strange nodular case and a forged 1350 yoke.

Also pulled the pan and timing cover off the engine.... We use Progear timing chais at our shop, however in the past 6 months we have had 3 timing chain failures(the actual chain itself broke...) I had the same style of timing chain on my engine and dont want to take the risk on having mine break. It is getting replaced by a Cloyes 9-3600TX9.

Got a bit accomplished this weekend...

Started by getting the engine back together with the new timing chain.
Attachment 358685

Timing cover back on
Attachment 358686

New ATI balancer (I went to rebuild the old one and found a crack in it...)
Attachment 358687

Oil pan back on.
Attachment 358688

Also finally made up my mind on the valve springs. These springs are made by PSI and are a LS based spring PN LS1512ML. The Retainers are a titanium Ferrea Super 7, matched with a PPP Titanium keeper.

Attachment 358689

Verifying true TDC on the new balancer VIA the valve drop method.

Almost all back together

I know what you mean, between year end and inventory I havnt had the time to do a lot on my car. The next thing on the agenda for the car is finish up the bodywork and paint. I'd like to see color on the car by Christmas because that means I can finally start putting it back together. I also wish more people would start posting in my thread. It seems its the same 2-3 people. Everyone seems more interested in the rattle can/rustoleum paintjob threads lol.

I reaaly do not post as much lately because of time, trying to button up projects by end of year to get my books in order for the end of tax season. I plan to start on my black car after the holiday, and have it on the road by March, thats if no other money projects pop up first lol

Attachment 358384

I have to keep books on all the builds and match up reciepts, I just started a 70 split bumper and its at 5K and I have not even started on the drive train. Hang in there, I know it gets financially blinding at times; thats why I only foster these cars. I heal them and move them to a new home, I plan to keep the third-gen and eventually get a 4th & 5th to have a complete set in time. Your project is coming along nicely, a really good build, look forward to the next set of car pic's.

Not going to run an electric fan? No battery moved to the trunk? Don't worry I've been reading since the start, I just don't comment a lot. I've got 15K into mine, most of which is drivetrain and paying for an engine to be rebuilt twice. And the engine is not nearly as nice/powerful as yours. And it's still not running... Hopefully by the end of Dec.

Keep up the good work.

This is an awsome project. I love the work on the heads. I am a big vortec head fan. I am experimenting with the World products 235 variants right now.

The body work is looking excellent also. Should be a very solid machine.

Are you still using the cam from the beginning of the post? Just a suggestion but you may want to look at something a little biased towards exhaust flow as the vortec heads come up a little weak in the intake to exhaust flow ratio. I saw earlier were you put the bigger exhaust rockers on. I imagine that will help quite a bit. All in all though I was surprised and impressed with the numbers you pulled on the dyno. It definitely shows your knowledge and attention to detail.

Im going to give it another coat of quide coat tomorrow then block it out to 320 then 400. Also went and picked up a gallon of Arctic white paint... guess im going white.
