1987 Trans Am: Project #2
 

Here is a new project I'm goin to do some work on. It's an 1987 Trans Am.

It's got a 305, a 700r4 that doesn't really work, drum rear (don't know ratio yet), a spray bombed purply-red paint job, a cheap fiberglass hood, a Flowmaster catback, and gta wheels. Even though the trans is bad now, I got to drive it in 1st and 2nd around the block a few times before it died. This thing still did pretty good, it spun the tires all the way up my driveway with the bad trans lol.

The goal for this car is to put a working trans in it, put a maf sensor and air cleaner assembly on it(have my gta's on it right now), fix the brakes (the rears lock up when barely touching the brake pedal), and seal any exhaust and vacuum leaks. It also needs some other things like new seat covers, the driver door hinge is completely destroyed and has started tearing up the GFX, and the headlight harness has been jury rigged together by one of the last owners. At least it works :lol:

This car is actually not for me though, it's for a friend who helped me get through my moms death a few years ago. She had stage 4 cancer, and I was obviously an upset teenager. I just want to give something back to him as he's been my friend my whole life and has helped me through a lot. When I get it driving again, I'm going to drive it his house and surprise him when he gets back from college.

Since I got my car, he's been in love with it and has been dying for one but can't really afford one. He also doesn't know much about cars, but wants to learn, so I figured I'd teach him what I know and we'd restore the car together.

Well, swapped out the transmission for a new rebuilt 700r4. It was a steal! The guy I bought it from just wanted the engine block out of the car it came from, he said the last owner put in the rebuilt trans and then blew up the engine in it within a 1/4 mile of driving it (he drained the oil out of the engine and locked it up).

Got the new trans in, and find out the rear limited slip unit died on me. One of the previous owners had left the fill plug off the rear and I guess it slowly drained out as I drove it. Pulled the diff cover off and found a handful of gear/LSD chunks in the gear housing, and almost no gear oil. It was a 3.42 gear, too. :(

Found another 3.23 limited-slip drum rear for next to nothing, finished installing it a few days ago. I go to drive it and the rear feels great, but the trans won't shift out of 2nd. I'm pretty sure I have the cable set properly.

After reading up some, it seems that it is something with the TV cable, the governor, or the 3-4 clutch pack is burned up. Seeing that the trans has under a mile on it, I don't see how anything in it could be severely damaged. I am wondering if maybe when I installed the TV cable the hook somehow slipped off the cable. Any ideas?


Moving on... last night, I decided to give my friend the car. Needless to say, he pretty much froze up for a while and could barely speak lol. I wish I could buy everyone a car!
