Pittsburgh Allegheny County Emissions

Anyone here with an inspection license in Allegheny County (Pittsburgh area) that the clarify the inspection requirements for a car register as "Classic"?

The inspection station where I go for my cars is telling me that even though my car is tagged/registered as a classic with emissions exemption, that it still has to pass a visual inspection on emissions equipment. Meaning they believe that since the car was originally equipped with a cat, smog pump and egr system that those parts still need to be there visually to pass the safety inspection even though as a classic registered car is emissions exempt.

That is a familier problem in many states. Even though your car is registered as classic and is emissions exempt, all that means is that they will not test the exhaust. But you still have to maintain the emissions equipment on the vehicle to be legal. That is federal law. That bit of info is in the fine print. I would suggest you find another shop to inspect your classic vehicle. Some shops are strict about following the rules, some others don't care about the federal rules and will let you slide. Ask other car guys in your town to find a another inspection station.

Actually I figured this out. If anyone else in Pennsylvania has any trouble with an inspection station claiming that the emissions equipment must be visible even though you have a collector or classic registration/plate, you can point them to page E-2 of the PA PUB-45 inspection rules. It states:
"Visual Inspection of Emission Control System shall not apply to vehicles registered as collectible or classic"

Once I showed this to the shop down the street from me they had no issues and performed the safety inspection. You'd think they would be versed in this kind of information, but apparently not.

Stick it to "The Man".

I'm very gassy and too young for Depends undergarments. I have no choice but to play Russian roulette with my flatus.
