i was just wondering if anybody on the board has run or is running a 125 or 150 horsepower nitrous setup with hyperutetic pistons in their engine. What adjustments have you made and have you run into any problems?

94-6spd 07-18-2002 07:18 PM

I run the 125 jets in my 350. I have the summit rebuild kit with hypereutectic pistons. The compression is 10.9:1.

The only adjusments that I have made are colder plugs, octane boost and a fuel pressure safety switch. Oh, I did back the timing down to 30 degrees at full advance. I have been thinking of trying the 150 jets once I get my car to hooking. I know a guy that ran 200 hp jets on his hypereutectic pistons for several years before it gave up.

Thanks for the in,94 6 speed,I realy appreciate it!

LilJayV10 07-25-2002 12:21 AM

i hope they hold, after i get my car going nitrous will be the next thing. I have speed pro hypernutetics, i set my ring gap at .022. Thats what speed pro recomended for a 125-150shot. Also they recomended steel rings because cast cant take a shot. Anyone have any experience with this? I have cast moly rings. hope they hold :D
NAAAWWWWWWWWWSSS, oh man what have they done to the youth of america.

Skweezn87 07-25-2002 09:57 AM

I was using a 175 shot on my KB HyperPro's .. they held just fine..
I was usinga TPI direct port setup as well...

i have stock hypers

Z28z 10-22-2002 08:15 AM

I don't have HYPERs but I've ran a 150 shot on stock cast pistons many times without a problem. I put in colder plugs, upgraded the ignition, and took out 4degrees of timing with the ignition box.

Ryche400 10-22-2002 07:26 PM

I was running 100 shot of nitrous on my 91 Z28 for months without any problems. Just use a little colder plug and GOOD fuel. Even sprayed 150 quite a few times. On the original bone stock engine with 80,000 miles. Best ET 12.64 @104. With Pulleys, headers and 3.73 gears.

1MeanZ 10-22-2002 10:34 PM

12.6 on a 100 horse shot or 150 horse shot? what kit are you runnin? are those the only mods you have Ryche400?

Raiden 10-23-2002 09:29 AM

I was told that the chemical combo with nitro and hypereutectic can be unsafe when detonation comes into play. A local machine shop told me to use cast pistons if i was going for the bottle and that hypereutectic pistons would be better for a supercharger/turbo setup rather than cast. I don't fully understand why but they said something about the chemical rxn with nitrous and hypereutectic. They said something along the lines of the pistons become really fragile. Something to reasearch aleast.:)

TBI305Camaro 10-23-2002 09:51 AM

Im gonna run a 75 shot on hyperutetic pistons im sure more would be Ok but i wanna be safe and i should need more than 75hp shot to outrun most 5.0s around here.

Raiden 10-23-2002 10:40 AM

make sure to invest in a purge valve! I had a 5151 kit on my vett and it worked great. But after 3 years, the nitrous valve went bad, leaked nitrous in the engine when i turned onthe bottle! I stepped on the gas and BOOOM lean condition = two burned valves onthe passengers side. What a PITA! Anyway, a purge valve not only works as a purge but also as a safety in such situations:) And be sure to get the large nitrous filter that you can clean! That has a lot to do with the longevity of the valves!

I did, but the ring gap was set to tight for normally asperated let alone nitrous and the ring butted and a catastrophic failure ensued. I will only do my own stuff from now on. I feel if that had not been the case the motor would have ran even to this day. I mean you gotta believe that KB's are atleast better than stock cast pistons, right?

firebird305 10-23-2002 12:29 PM

Thanks for the info guys,I had called the tech line at Keith Black,And the tech line guy was telling me about how they have test engines that are shooting a 250 horse shot with no longevity problems,I guess it seems that correct timeing is the key,And running good fuel,Thanks for the help:)

Raiden 10-23-2002 12:38 PM

also, get a custom chip or burn your own! less timming is better for super/turbo/nitro cars. more is not always better!

THANK YOU B4Ctom1

There are other that would have some sailor talk toward those pistons. But the times I've seen some pics of piston damage, there is evidence of detonation and the rings butting.

I have flat top hyperutectic pistons in my ZZ-4 block and run a NOS#5151 kit with a 150 shot. AFR's have 58 cc chambers and O-ringed head gaskets. I haven't had any problems at all. My best run to date is an 11.97 @113 mph on the happy juice. I run 94 octane with 108 octane booster (when using the nitrous), NGK #10 plugs and retard base timing to 6* BTDC. 6,000 miles and still running like a clock:) check out the sig.

Ryche400 10-26-2002 06:02 PM

This is for 1meanZ. I am running a pretty much stock setup. My car does have a small Compucar cam, so I am told. When i bought the car someone had swapped the original roller cam for a hydraulic. Other than that it has pulleys, (which suck) cheap Flowtech headers, 3.73 gears. Everything is original. As far as HP level I went 12.89 on 100 shot, at 104 and 12.64 at 104 with 150 having to let of the throttle cause the trans would not shift in third. Also have a cheap1800-2200 rebuilt converter.

1MeanZ 10-29-2002 11:00 AM

wow that is impressive. i have a rebuilt 305 with an LPE 214/224 cam, ported intake, headers, and by the time i add the nitrous i will also have a 2500rpm stall converter and a transgo shift kit. i am lookin for low 13s but guys like you out there runnin in the 12 who knows what i can pull off!

Walkersteelhead 11-03-2002 11:23 AM

150 horse nitrous shouldnt be a problem. A friend is runnin 250 and we tore down the mtr down last winter just to check stuff out and everything looked great.

LilJayV10 11-03-2002 12:51 PM

is everyone talking about keith black silvo lite hypernutetics? I have speed pro hypers. i think the KB's are better pistons from what I have read. just wondering. thanks.

92camaro 11-03-2002 03:26 PM

I know this is a different car but I have sparyed a 200shot on a stock 1995 mustang motor. The 95's come with hyper piston. I would figure a set of stock piston would be much weaker then a set of keith black's or speed pro piston. I think you should be fine with the 150 shot as long as the tune is correct. Just make sure you back the timing off use a 2 step colder plugs and run good gas. Is the car fuel injected or carb? Is the nitrous going to be dry or wet?

firebird305 11-04-2002 07:04 AM

I'm running a carter 600 cfm carb and it will be a wet systym.

92camaro 11-04-2002 04:33 PM

Who's system are you going to run? You should be fine. You might want to add alittle extra fuel just to make sure everything is happy.

Free Bird 11-04-2002 05:45 PM

I ran a 100 shot w/ the old cam. Once I get my intake in I'll test out the 150.

firebird305 11-05-2002 12:31 AM

I was going to go with the sniper systym from N.O.S.,It seems like a good systym.
