Shes Alive!!!!!

Got the car running this afternoon for the first time in almost 2 years!!!!!!!

I hooked up the exaust today as and then she was ready to fire. She fired right up on the first try and idled like a champ. I didnt get a chance to drive her though because my million year old belt started to come apart and havent blead the clutch line yet. I am so pumped right now!

I did run into a problem though, for some reason the 30 amp fuse I have hooked up to my fan and alternator switch keeps blowing for some reason. So I cant drive it until I figure that out. Once I get that figured out I will get my new windshield and then get my registration and inspection and I am ready for the Winter meet.

Dude, I am so glad you asked about the brackets. It makes the hard work worth it. I sanded, sand blasted, primered, and then painted them with high temp aluminum paint that you can find at any auto zone. I painted all my pulleys as well. I will keep everyone updated, I probably wont drive the car until next saturday because I have been extremely busy.

Cool, i might have to do that while mine is apart possibly. Yea, it is people on here that are dedicated enthusiasts that notice things like that. Glad to see people take the time to detail such things so people like us can appreciate the work. Seriously, i am really jealous right now. Same year, same standard trans, same RS. Gonna be cool to see you car in person!!!

nice to know she is back alive, my bird went back on the road yesterday after sitting for a month(nowhere near your waiting period tho) my belt shredded going to the store, i had to cut the bad part and put the rest of it back on to get me to local parts store.(two groves started coming off) also as far as fan blowing out the fuses i found out that when fan motor starts going bad and drawing too much current it will blow out the fuse.

Re: Shes Alive!!!!!

Thanks for the heads up on the fuse, I hope my fan is not going out because I got a great deal on it two years ago, and I dont think I can afford to by it at market price right now.

Re: Shes Alive!!!!!

Bad News!!!!!
I knew that everything was going to well for me this time around. Three problems

1. The car caught on fire. The wire loom for the starter wires touched the headers and BOOM!!!! Everything down there caught of fire and all the positive wires started popping off. My starter was cranking, my alternator might be fried and my fan is probably fried as well. This is terrible news cosidering I dont have much cash left in the budget, and I might need to replace all of these items now.

2. Oil is leaking out of my timing cover. I have never had this problem before and I am ticked.

3. Coolant is also leaking from somewhere. YEAH!!!

I am not very happy right now. Saturday I am going to pull the drivers side header and redo the wiring to see if I still have power to everything. I also need to bleed my clutch cylinders as well. I probably wont drive the thing until next month.

UPDATE!!!!

All right, I pulled the header and rewired everything and all my accessories were fine! So I fired her up without jumper cables for the first time and got her tuned in real nice and let her run for about 30 minutes to see how hot she would get and everything was bueno. I still have the oil leak and I havent traced the coolant leak so I will have to get to that next week. I am still leaking clutch fluid from somewhere so I am frustrated with that, but things are going well.

UPDATE!!!

Everything is right where it should be engine wise and electicly, however I still have not fixed my clutch problem. I posted a question in the tech/general section so hopefully those guys can help and I can get my car driveable. Here is a video I put together today of the car running:

Sweet, you still need a tune or is it where you want it?

IROCaholic 10-20-2007 11:40 PM

Re: Shes Alive!!!!!

Its tuned decent, but I am putting a new carb on this week that should smooth out the idle a little and give me better mileage.

Re: Shes Alive!!!!!

FINAL UPDATE!!!!
Today I made the huge mistake of trying to fix my leaking timing cover. Well to make a long story short I somehow dropped one of my timing cover bolts into the oil pan(which should have been impossible) and now I am back to square one. The engine has to come back out so I can take off the pan and redo the gasket which is now covered in rtv because of the shitty angle I was working at.

I have decided to just go ahead and call it quits. I have already thrown $1000 at this thing in 4 months and I still have to get a clutch line, new windshield, inspection, registration, and insurance. I have been blowing off work, school, and my girl and I just cant keep doing it. I need start saving up for christmas now considering I have knocked out half of my savings and I generally need about that much for travel and presents. So good luck to all those out there who are actually going to be able to drive there cars to the meet. I might show up just to see how things are going.

Re: Shes Alive!!!!!

Sorry to hear that dude. It may be too late, but did you try to use a magnet on a flexable shaft to pull the bolt from the oil pan through the front? If you can't find it there, I would drain the oil, tap on the pan to locate the bolt. If it is in the sump area, I would not be concerned about it. I appears from the pics that you used a stock timing cover and therefore had to drop the front of the pan down to remove the timing cover. If it seperated without tearing the gasket, it will seal if re-tightend. You may be aware of this already, but there are two bolt holes facing the front of the motor on or near the fuel pump boss. If there are no bolts in these holes, then your oil very likely is coming from one of the those holes that go into the crankcase near the fuel pump boss. It was put there by the factory to use a long bolt in to capture the fuel pump rod so the fuel pump could be installed. Put some sealant on some short bolts and install them. When you put the front cover back on, before tightening the bolts, push the balancer on by hand to center the front cover on the seal. Tighten a few bolts and remove it to get to the rest of them. You did not say where the water was leaking from, but use a mirror to check the freeze plugs in the heads and also the heater core and hoses. It may not be as bad as it appears. Could be running in a night or two. Good luck.

Re: Shes Alive!!!!!

Been there, done all of that. But thanks for taking the time to point all of that out. I do think that the bolt is in the sump, but I will dont start this motor back up until that bolt is out, no matter what. I really wanted to get the car running, but even if I had a good day today I just dont have the cash to get her going again. Maybe if by some small miracle a couple of awesome deals come my way in the next week I can afford to get it going again, but I highly doubt it. It was nice to be a car guy again for a few months though. Back to family and business though.
