new member, new owner

Hello everyone, I have been lurking for awhile without an account. I am a mechanic, fabricator and I recently bought my highschool crush. a white 91 rs 305 tbi t top. it has 135,000 miles, no accidents and had been sitting for 8 years. a bunch of work and money later (insert sweet montage) I got it legal and inspected and near stock running properly. I wanted a project that i could drive while i work on it, and i have to say that the quality of this car is incredible. it was a lady owned car and one owner, the interior is perfect save for the dash cracks, the roll up hatch cover still works and i even have the t top bag in the correct holders. the plan is to dump the turd 305 and put in a 355 that im building right now from a 010 block. sphon suspention, frame extentions, qa1 coil overs, gonna extend the turn stops a little, reverse manual valve body and ratchet shifter and shoot for around 450 hp motor 600 bottle. right now im replacing the complete cooling system with a champion 4 core radiator, new hf water pump, hoses, heater core, and heater valve. installing a vac guage into the cowl on my hood, and loving every second of driving this fine a** automobile. i have a huge list of stuff i have done but im sure it would bore people so... just wanted to say hi and make some friends!

Welcome to the board. Where are you at in Texas. There are often people looking for mechanics familiar with 3rd gens. Congrats on the car and keep us updated on what you do with it.

im about an hour outside of Austin, on hwy 290 headed towards Houston. :-) I have been known to hire out my services, and i like to give any information i have for free to people who want to fix their own stuff. Thanks for the warm welcome!

The car cleaned up really nice.

Re: new member, new owner

thanks guys, im ordering the sphon frame extentions and rear end parts in a few days, progress should be pretty quick with a 2k a month budget on this build

mrontime 02-27-2018 10:07 AM

Re: new member, new owner

p.s. i dont mind a cracked muscle car dash, its authentic lol. at least its metal based, the eclipse spyder i built, the dash just exploded into tiny peices. i could live with this dash for years, i even drilled the tach wires into one of the cracks as a styling accent lol

Re: new member, new owner

a few goodies on the way, spohn frame extentions, and spohn precision steering set with a set of ball joints to tide me over till i can order the complete k member. also i won a 1991 t top amt model on ebay that is an exact copy of my car still in the box... literally the only one of my exact year model i have found.

mrontime 03-11-2018 10:03 AM

Re: new member, new owner

got the steering parts and subframe connectors in. i removed the side skirts and knocked out about 10 lbs of concrete like dirt, found some new dents to fix and started working on fixing a few bad spots on the hood. the side skirts need a few repairs or replacing as well, one tab is broken off and there are some cracks around the back air dam

Re: new member, new owner

Good stuff.

If you like, keep adding pics here and this can be like a build thread to track your progress. That's an impressive monthly budget by the way! I wish I could put that into my toys every month.

Re: new member, new owner

thank you, that is what i planned on doing instead of clogging up the posts. its how i unwind and keep my mind occupied. i used to build custom and ecspecially long range firearms, then i got into atv's and built a 1982-1984 ish 250r three wheeler, a 1973 opel gt, a 2010 kawasaki ninja 650r that was wrecked that i converted into a race bike. im not rich, i work hard in the oilfeild... its more of an addiction than a hobby. i feverishly need to complete my vision each time, and each time it becomes more detailed and intricate. when i was 15 i saw a blue 89 or 90 IROC and ive wanted one every since. this build is special to me though, its the first build that me and my dad have done together. he is a first gen guy to the core and a master mechanic of tall tale proportions. having built alot of cars and jets and pretty much anything powered by fuel i often forget to take pictures, im not on fb or any social media, but i will try to remember to post some pics from time to time. today i stuck a cd player i had in another car in the delco hole... literally just set it in there and wired the rear speakers only in.

Re: new member, new owner

im actually thinking of getting a second job to up the budget to try and make the hotrod drags this year. even with a 2k a month budget its split in half. that means waiting a month to save for the rotating assembly, another month on the front end, another on the rear axel, another on the read coil over swap and pinto steering.... it adds up to alot of time lol. i try to stack up different small projects to fill the time and stay busy because i firmly believe that the worst thing that can happen is a project stalling...

Re: new member, new owner

well, she tried to kill me today. it was a pretty day and i finally got the t top bag back in the trunk this morning. so i popped the tops and cruised home from work on the main hwy. i guess the headliner had never seen hwy speeds, the dust that used to be the headliner foam invaded my eyes with extreme prejudice. at 75 with traffic all around me and blind from malicious dust i decided the headliner just took precidence. i got home and pulled it out, reinstalled all the interior peices that i had to remove, which wasnt much and hit the car wash vaccum. i usually build my cars into stripped out cars, but i really like the interior in this car, so im gonna use the fiberglass i have left over from doing the hood to repair and strengthen the headliner and then recover it and put it back in, if that fails im gonna make one from aluminum and cover it.

mrontime 03-25-2018 08:58 AM

Re: new member, new owner

got the 1" rrx swaybar in last night. wooo weee its getting fun to drive. this check ill be ordering the rear coil over qa1 shocks and the front coil over rrx control arms, and maybe the strut tower brace cash willing.

Re: new member, new owner

gonna up the budget some, i really wanna make an auto cross even before oct. gonna try to take it to little river in the next few weeks and do a few runs to see what kinda times itll put down pre motor work. my dad, the previous owner drove it for the first time since selling it to me last night and he was like a kid, laughing and having a ball. i talked him into starting work on his first gen 69 last night too, were gonna be doing it in between times when im waiting on parts.

Re: new member, new owner

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...222ded75fb.jpgtried to change the third brake light bulb and the bulb housing disentegrated. the actual cowl and lense are ok, so i wired in a cbr1000rr rear tail light that was led and fit the gap just right. then i ran a little foil shiny side up to really make it glow. should be better than original.

mrontime 03-26-2018 11:57 PM

Re: new member, new owner

i forgot to say why i think this is a cool mod, it adds a crap load of functionality that wasnt there before if you want it. this was a smoke led integrated turn signal lense on the bike, meaning the leds are red for brake on, how i have it wired now. but it also has a lower running light wire, and orange turn signals that im kinda toying with the idea of making a splitter for the lense to cowl and making work to add a little trick visibility. ill post a pick of it on the car and on tomarrow when the epoxy has set. thanks everyone who looks or says basically anything. :-)
