Harris County is gay!!!

Ok I went to get my emissions done today & I failed because my tint was 9% above the "state allowed" darkness and I have an open element filter instead of the stock $hit. I passed the CO, CO2, & O2 readings but the state doesn't like an open element filter?!? It really pisses me off.... Since I'm doing a cam swap, & a few other things including redoing my xhaust I prolly won't pass next year so does anyone know of anywhere that will just give you a sticker? Or happen to not notice whats coming out of ur xhaust

Thanks,

-Timbo-

Dude you can borrow my old air-filter set up to pass....lol

Man this does suck, luckly I live in montgomery county and dont have that prob.:D

92RSB4C 03-19-2002 04:14 PM

Well, I'm glad I moved!!! I live in Galveston County now. Well, if you could borrow that guys "enclosed" setup, it would solve that problem, but the tint won't be solved. You might try going to other places ans see if they'll pass you.

ATXJester 03-19-2002 06:00 PM

glad i'm moving to a county that doesn't do emissions testing ;)

JuGrNuT350 03-19-2002 06:39 PM

Thanks for offering your old enclosed filter but I still got mine collecting dust in the attic... I think I'm going to slap the old intake on and go back w/o doing the tint & show them the inspection sheet from last year when the truck passed, and tell them I was told that the tint was state legal. I just think itz bull$hit that I would have to lighten my tint by 9% to pass state EMISSIONS inspection.... As far as next year goes there's a guy I work w/ that says he goes to a place in Aldine that's um lenient on their inspections.

89ROC 03-20-2002 03:14 PM

Go to a different inspection station. That place will probably still fail you for tint, which I've never heard of.. Guess they're really anal.

Emmissions is soon to be about everywhere, from what I hear. Starting in May..

:(

ATXJester 03-20-2002 04:30 PM

not everywhere...rockwall county isn't doing it.

Rock90rs 03-23-2002 06:35 PM

Starting may of 2002 Harris and any other county that already has emissions testing will start the new ASM test. (dyno) Starting May of 2003 all counties bordering harris will have to comply with ASM emissions testing. That includes Galveston and Montgomery counties.......sorry fellas one more year:(

JuGrNuT350 03-24-2002 01:49 AM

So they're going to dyno hp & torque now when they do emissions? Why are they doing that? I'm just trying to figure out why they care how dark your tint is(as long as it isn't limo tint) & why the state is so anal about having a stock air intake & cleaner over something like a open element of CAI if it doesn't do anything to your emissions, since that is what you are being tested for.

-Timbo-

Sonar_un 03-25-2002 10:24 PM

ah, but it does have something to do with your emissions. The computer uses the air information from the Mass Airflow Sensor(I think thats it) that is located in your stock air cleaner. Also, they are anal about having the Thermac connected and having the PCV Breather in the stock element. It does have to do with emissions and performance related stuff.

The best thing to do though, is just take 10 min, put the stock air cleaner back on before you do the inspection. :)

Sonar_un 03-25-2002 10:27 PM

Oh, also, when they do the dyno test, its only at two speeds. Not a full on dyno. They are smart about it also. The speeds are before peak peformance when your engine is not burning the fuel as efficently as possible. Believe you me, you better have all that emissions crap on your car next time you go. Also, there is almost no way to get around the emissions testing stuff like you can do now with just a state inspection sticker. All the data is fed through a computer system in austin. Where your car's data is located and stored. Tampering with it is almost impossible.

Rock90rs 04-02-2002 07:17 PM

1. No mass air on TBI's they are Map.

2. It wont measure Hp,...Its a Dyno but its only for simulated load. 25 mph max

3. The state has been doing that for years.

:D

JuGrNuT350 04-02-2002 11:15 PM

I would understand the open element thing but I passed on all my actual exhaust emissions...they were only slightly higher than last years when I didn't own the truck... I'll illegal now because mine expired in 2 days ago but I'll try another place where they do other things but emissions & ask them about my tint & the filter maybe they'll be cool unlike the gay *** Sticker Station in Humble.

TexasLT1 04-22-2002 11:34 AM

um, heres a stupid question, but what about all the guys like me that have done engine swaps. are they not going to pass me just because its not the stock friggen engine?! I swear if some poor fool tries to tell me that I'll throw him across the car. Thats why Im getting mine inspected before the may deadline so that I'll have another year to figure out what to do. besides the fact that ina year I may not even be in the state any more for college, so we'll see.

JuGrNuT350 04-22-2002 12:24 PM

Whats happening in May that everyone is getting go pumped up about? I know their changing registration & inspection right but how drastic is it going to be?

-Timbo-

89ROC 04-22-2002 02:05 PM

emmissions are ghey. Hey Rocky - what about engine swaps? My 84TA has a 75' model 350 block with no emmissions BS whatsoever. Can't I just put a sticker in it from another car, or will it pass since the motor is from 1975? If not then I know people who live in BFE, and could just register it there...

RAD92RS 04-22-2002 10:46 PM

Emissions..

This whole new emissions thing is pissing me off bigtime.I was watching on the news about 2 weeks ago they were doing a special on it, and they said with the new testing it will take about 20% of cars off the road. The whole reason behind the new emissions is because if they dont do it...they will lose a ton of federal highway funding...you know...those federal highways we have to pay 75 cents to get on(161).It all comes down to $$$$$.
The shops have to buy a specific testing machine that costs 45,000....wich im sure the state will get a decent kickback from the manufacturer for getting them this deal.I know alot of shops cant afford that...so they wont be inspectings cars any longer.
Its all about money.....
If the state REALLY wanted to clean up the air...they would have to start right in front of them...thier own vechicles. Im sure you noticed all the DOTs cars and trucks are old *** beaters....wich are exempt. While I was watching all this on the news...there was a reporter talking to the head of the DOT and he asked if all the states vechicles were going to be tested...the answer was no....go figure......its like the police saying....we are gonna get rid of all the drug dealers in the state......but were gonna let alot of then still deal. I dont know if this makes much sense..im tired.....
All about cash though......
You know what they do in Germany......

JuGrNuT350 04-22-2002 11:22 PM

Yea I saw a bit of it on the news 2nite at my girlfriend's house....The new "smog" test is only for 95 & older cars(pretty much all of us here), & only certain shops w/ a yellow check mark can do our rides, so we have to drive around looking for these shops until we find one that can do ours.... I'm so pissed, all this is going to do is make those of us who really do care about the enviroment some & want our cars & trux be somewhat nature friendly is gonna make us find a place that will pass us & give us a sticker for a few more $$$$... I'm still driving on an expired inspection sticker & am not in a big hurry to get a new one, I will soon but I'm not worried about it, so the state govt. can shove it up their fat @$$es!!! Is it just Harris county doing these new tests or the whole state? Just fuming a bit

AsylumX 04-23-2002 12:57 AM

Well you could always take a small drive east to Van Zandt county. Here the entire inspection process includeds honking your horn and checking your blinkers.

RAD92RS 04-23-2002 07:58 AM

emissions

does your car have to be registered in that county?
or can someone that lives there take a car in to be done?
if so...you wanna hook a brother up!!!!

89ROC 04-23-2002 10:42 AM

Yes your car has to be registered there.... It's the same way in Collin Co where I live, there's no emmissions testing at all here. But people from Dallas Co can't come up here to get an inspection.

AsylumX 04-23-2002 01:34 PM

Actually I think the people at the local Texaco care more about getting paid for the inspection sticker than actually doing the inspection. I've never had them check any paperwork or anything. It's always been. "Pull in. stop. horn. blinkers. Here's your sticker" All legal.:D
