First 700r4 rebuild.

Well, I'm about to take on my first transmission rebuild. The 700r4. We bought another camaro the other week. And the the tranny hasn't been right since we got it. After a week of research. And and reading this site. Along with many others. And doing my own diagnostics. I've final accepted that the 3-4 gears are gone. Hope to pull it today. And get what tools I don't have. I am curious to know if anybody has any suggestions as to the best place to get my parts around Atlanta Ga. This is the ladys joy riding car. I'm not chasing HP with it. But! I only intend on building it once. I can find kits everywhere. What I need is a place to be able to get some upgraded parts. Steel clutches, better Servo, stronger band , stronger drum . Exc. I hope to not spend a fortune on it true. But from what I've been reading. It seems most everybody that has any real knowledge of this equipment feels that gm didn't use strong enough parts in it for what its used for. Kinda think that's why the fella sold such a clean and well kept RS, he knew about the tranny . He told me about it when I bought it. Figure he didn't want the hassle. Seeing that so many of these don't ever see 1000 miles on a rebuild. So if anybody knows the best place I may get my parts. Please advise. I'm looking at northern and summit at the moment. Although i would like to find a more affordable place to get em if that is even possible. But I don't wanta get em on line. Not for this. Thanks!!!!

He's not in Atlanta but he's the only person you should be talking to when it comes to a self built 700R4 ---> Dana at Pro Built Automatics. Tell him what you want and he will sell you what you need.

I'll keep him in mind. Thanks.
I just can't seem to accept that this transmission is burned up. I've burned up 8 or ten in my day. You usually can smell em. And they generally slip a lil bit first. I've been doing lots of reading and diagnostics on this whole machine this wk. And the deeper I get involved in it. The more I learn, that this 700 is a beast. But when she catches a cold. It can be a complex matter finding out what's goin on. It's my inherited mentality that has to understand what's caused the problem before I can fix anything. I think tonight i found a critical symptom. Finally.

Re: First 700r4 rebuild.

Definitely the best way to go about it. Mine is still holding up nicely to a lot of turbo tpi abuse for the past 18+ months. My first attempt to build a 700r4 (first on ANY transmission for that matter) has outlasted all other 700R4's I've had built by someone else combined! LOL

Anyway Dana loves talking transmissions - he once called me on a Sunday night around 8pm just to discuss things about my planned trans build. So he'd be glad to discuss your issue and get you the right part(s). He posts on the forums here as well.
