Sorry, they won't ship those to Ca.

Also, there are no more cheap cats in Ca. they are all over a $100 now (as of 1-1-'09)

Did you buy it after Jan 1, 2009? That cat is illegal for replacement in Ca. after that date. If you have it installed before Jan 1 it is legal until it needs replaced. If you install an older style before you go to smog, you are ok, but if it fails smog and the tech figures it needs a cart to pass, it is technically illegal to use an older style. If there is no proof that you changed out the cat, you can get by.

The tech has no idea when you bought and installed the cat.

You have three choices. Pay the extra money for a California cat, or buy the regular kind from Jegs or Summit and have them shipped to a friend outside of California who will ship them to you. Or buy the regular kind from someone on Ebay who doesnt care where they ship them.

Although it maybe illegal to install this CAT in CA, They advertise free shipping to the lower 48 states with small fee to Alaska and Hawaii.

Well that's to bad. I had a link of a place that sells from ebay magna flow? Im sure there still the same price, now the shipping Im not sure of. 200.00 for a cat is alot.

So what's the thing about a Ca cat?

The newest edition of California smog laws that went into effect Jan 1 of 2009 allows the use of old cats as long as they are still working, but requires that any new cat installed on a vehicle after Jan 1 to be of the obdII type two stage. Technically, if a shop has the old style in stock, they are not supposed to install them if I remember correctly. A muffler shop that does not have a smog license could conceivably install an old style, "left over" cat, but a shop with a smog license risks their smog license if they do it.

Yet another stupid law from our wonderful California hippies in gov't. What they dont realize is that people will just drive to Nevada or Arizona rather than pay the higher prices here.
All I care about is that you have a cat on the car.

Re: need catalytic converter for CA

I paid $260 to install a CA. legal Magnaflow 3" cat on my camaro and it still didnt pass smog. I changed the cat because my first smog check didnt pass on the HC at the 25mph test it was 96 ppm and the max was 83ppm the 15mph test was 108 ppm at the limit of 108. after I put the new cat it went down to 52 and 42 so HC improved but the NO failed after i put the new cat on.now they say its the egr valve. it barely didnt pass smog on the re-test by about 60 points at the 25mph speed test. I just installed the new cat the day before and I drove the car from my house to the test only smog place about a 1/2 mile. could it be the cat wasnt warmed up enough? otherwise I will have to spend another 150 to change the egr because you have to remove the intake manifold. why did they put it there so you cant reach the egr? on the retest after I installed the cat. the NO didnt pass at 25mph-763 ppm. the MAX is 706 everything else passed. if you dont understand me let me know not mechanically savy:confused::gocrazy:

Re: need catalytic converter for CA

Yes its possible, the cat does have to be up to temp to operate properly and it will reduce your NOx besides just the EGR valve. Get the car hot and make sure its tested when its hot.

Re: need catalytic converter for CA

Even if you run lower octane fuel normally, running 91 will help the nox numbers, and as Tom said get it hot and keep it hot. Take the car out and run it before you go to the test station, then don't try to save money by shutting off the engine while you wait. Keep it running to keep everything hot while you wait your turn.
