please help. don know much about susp.

do i need a whole new suspension. when i drive over 60 mph it like shakes and bounces up and down a little bit. not a ton but very noticable and to be honest is getting very annoying. do you think i need whole new suspenion. or coils only
or struts only. please help me

are the springs still good? how many miles does the suspension have on it?

have you tightened the crossmember bolts?

what shape are the brakes in?

and the bearings, are they still good and greased?

are your tierods worn or the balljoints going bad?

and are your tires still good and properly inflated and balanced?

havent tighten cross member bolt. where is that. the brakes are brand new. just replaced the bearings about a month ago. tires are brand new and inflated properly. it seems to be coming mainly from the back. the car have 187,000 miles and im not sure if it has been replaced or not. i have only had it a couple months

First thing you need to do is rebalance the rear tires and make sure they are round (no runout). If they are good look at the driveshaft. They are bad about wobbling.

if it has that many miles on it i would check every nut and bolt you can find on it.

With a car with that much milage on it, it's hard to narrow the problem down since pretty much everything in the suspension is old and worn out.

That said, what your describing sounds very similar to problems related to the stock steel driveshaft. Many people have had problems with vibration at speeds of 70+ MPH in these cars, and a common cure seems to be to replace the stock steel driveshaft with an aluminum driveshaft. You might try having a trustworthy shop try to rebalance the steel shaft first, before investing in a new one.

Hope that helps.

The bouncing is the struts/shocks, they are blown and need to be replaced. The vibration can be many things, I would say replace all the bushings in the entire car (do the struts/shocks at the same time) and then re-align the car which should include balancing the tires.

I work on cars for a living. I have been doing front end work for the past 7 years and blown struts or worn out bushings won't make a car vibrate. I bet if you jack the back end up and run it at 70 mph it'll shake just like it was going down the road.

Correct, the bushings themselves probably won't cause bad vibrations but worn front bushings can cause the car to loose its alignment settings which can cause vibrations when driving at higher speeds. There are also alot of other possibilities too, with the driveshaft being one of them. I dont think its possible to really troubleshoot this over the Internet. But the way I see it, if the dampeners are blown then the bushings are probably on the way out too. Replacing them would be a good move regardless if it fixes the vibration or not. Everything will be apart while the struts are being replaced, seems like the sensible thing to do. Then at least he can prove that out and move on to other possibilities if a re-alignment and wheel balancing dosnt fix the problem. If it was the driveshaft I would imagine he would have had a vibration problem long before the suspension started giving him problems.

To the original poster, how does the tread wear on the front tire look? Even?
