Installing Subframe Connectors?

Anyone here put these things on yet? I have a 92 RS w/t-tops. What brand do ya'll recommend? The cheapest I've seen are the Jegsters, of course in Jegs. They're about $180. They say that they're designed to clear the stock exhaust. That's what I want. I noticed a lot of other companies say theirs won't clear the stock exhaust. https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/confused.gif

I also wanted to know how much of an improvement they made? And how much of a pain in the a-- they are to put in? I am gonna be putting in a 350 that I am building right now. I know the car twists like heck now with the 305 in there. So I'm gonna need them. Any response will be very helpful. Thanks

Please search the boards - this topic has been covered countless times.

Personally, I have the Spohn SFCs. They make an amazing difference - especially if you have t-tops like I do. I had mine welded in at a shop, cost for installation: $150. I have headers and the Flowmaster 3" exhaust and had no clearance problems at all. The fit is excellent!

I think there are some out there alot cheaper than $180, but in discussions over cost the result always seems to be: you get what you pay for.

I must say that I am thinking along the lines of bolt-in connectors. I would rather do the work myself and I don't know how to weld. If the bolt in ones really suck then tell me.

Thanks again

the bolt in one suck from what I have learned here. The hole stretch out over time and become less effective. get yourself some weld-in ones and have a pro do it.

or he could get the bolt in ones. install them, drive his car down to the local muffler shop, have them weld some lines on the seams and ta-dah he is done.

Actually I'd thought about doing that. Why couldn't they just weld the seams. I just know that the metal has to be very clean in order to obtain a good weld. Would they be able to do that, or should I prep the surface before I bolt them on? That way they would be free of debris and rust. Although, the rear part bolts to the lower control arm. Could they weld around there?
Thanx RARE-ROC-Z

RARE-ROC-Z 05-03-2001 10:58 PM

hey you dont need to weld the rear part that bolts to the LCA bracket, it wont move anyways, think about it, it has enough stress already, it can handle more!!
its the front bolt holes that oblong! so just have them weld them there! and you will be perfectly fine

AJ_92RS 05-07-2001 04:11 PM

Thanx dudes. I have been putting this off for sometime just because of my ignorance. I think I'll be callin' Jegs today. https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/smile.gif

I have had the Jegs bolt in connectors for many years and have had no problems at all. I have the SLP cat-back system and clearance is fine. As for the bolt hole stretch, I have seen none. Ignore the myth, for the street, bolt in's are more than fine.

IROC KID 05-08-2001 01:06 AM

how much is the shipping on sfcs from jegs?

AJ_92RS 05-08-2001 09:52 AM

Jeg's gives free shipping, but they add like $6 or $7 for P&H. I have ordered stuff from them quite a few times and have always been happy with their attitude. They are super helpful. That and everything came to my house faster than what they said it would. I hate it when I call somewhere and I know more than the other guy who is supposed to be selling me something. Jeg's ain't like that.

junkyarddog 05-08-2001 09:58 PM

I have some hotchkis SFCs sitting in my closet, yes they are weld in. I'm not procrastinating,I just need to find someone who's not a total jackass, that can do some welding for me (and move that headmen y-pipe out of the way) if your going through all the trouble, might as well use the beefy stuff! I'd recomend the hotchkis, those things are SOLID!

I have Steve Spohn's subframes and it is an amazing difference once they are installed....

Get Spohn's connectors... they are the best....

IROC KID 05-13-2001 11:17 AM

i have heard great things about all steve spohns stuff,a few buddies have his suspension items and they say its great quality for the money,i was just wondering if anyone knows his price shipped for the sfcs?,i also am wondering if anyone has heard of BMR,i have heard they sell knockoff crap copied from other companies designs.

JamesC 05-14-2001 12:31 PM

I like Global West's tubular version. The fit is first rate, and at least on my 85 IROC, there was no exhaust modification required. Pics available, should anyone be interested. I belive $190 shipped.

IROC KID: I have a BMR STB and I think it is great. I got great service from them and it is a great looking piece with "BMR" cut into the middle of the bar - hard to explain but looks really cool.

IROC KID 05-14-2001 01:44 PM

yeah,i checked out BMRs site and the strut tower brace does look good,i just hear that the sfcs and some other stuff is copied cheaply of other companies products, how long did it take you to put in the strut tower brace from them?,is it a nice piece and well fabricated?

blacksunshine'91 05-14-2001 02:01 PM

Hey JamesC, could you e-mail me some of the pics of those subframe connectors? I am planning on getting some of those from Global West on the 1st. My e-mail is "blacksunshine@transamgta.com" (I don't know how to make the nifty links from this page).

P.S. I will be putting the aluminum d-shaft I got from you in at the same time along with a few other items(new tranny from Pro-built, hotchkis LCA's, etc.)
