Re: UMI Releases New Product: 3rd Gen Lowering Springs

What's the ETA for the rear weight jacks? Will you also sell the front and rear lowering springs independent?

UMI Sales 10-25-2018 11:34 AM

Re: UMI Releases New Product: 3rd Gen Lowering Springs

Thanks for the inquiry.

We can indeed sell the springs independently.

Our goal is to have the rear weight jacks ready for Black Friday but that's an internal goal (external now that I posted it on the interweb I guess). As with any goal it depends on variables like spring supplier, weld shop busy-ness, etc.

If you're not subscribed to our newsletter where we make the announcements you can do so here.

thx

That Camaro sits very nicely.

Re: UMI Releases New Product: 3rd Gen Lowering Springs

It sure does! I really didn't want mine any lower than stock (hate worrying about scraping on stuff), but damn that looks good. Sensible spring rates as well. Already have Konis too, hmmmmm...

Re: UMI Releases New Product: 3rd Gen Lowering Springs

While I am no expert the rear rate seems overly stiff for the soft front rate. I don’t remember exactly who, maybe slicktrack, but someone here suggested 4:1/front:rear was a good starting point to get these machines to handle well. May seem like a strange question but what’s the free height on these?

UMI Sales 11-18-2018 07:59 PM

Re: UMI Releases New Product: 3rd Gen Lowering Springs

Send me a message to ramey@umiperformance.com to remind me to measure the free height.

In general a passenger car tends to push (understeer) so we have the rear rate raised a little bit to compensate and get the car to rotate.

As we develop the chassis on these, we'll fine tune the rates.

For the intended use on this set, the cars work great. Also there are many different sway bars out there as well as other tuning aids.

Oh, PS, we also have our weight jack kits both coming out and on sale for Black Friday.

The weight jack kits have a few other spring rate options.

Re: UMI Releases New Product: 3rd Gen Lowering Springs

Keep in mind guys while these springs will and do work well on a handling car this are a great street friendly comfort spring. We have been very happy with the overall driveability of these rates, especially when combined with a set of quality shocks. For more handling based cars our weight jacks offer more rate options and ability to adjust/tune.

Re: UMI Releases New Product: 3rd Gen Lowering Springs

UMI - how would these compare to Eibach Sportlines?
I have a set of uninstalled new sportlines, but I also have several UMI products on my 89 Iroc that I am very happy with. Just curious what the comparison would be if you know? Only reason I ask is that I have had 2 prior and 1 current other vehicles with Eibach products that I have been happy with as well.
Thanks

Might be a stupid question but do these work well on verts as well. I was told once by a mechanic that vert springs are different and tough to find. He may have just been talking about stock replacements but I cant imagine how there would be any difference. Mine is an 89 iroc vert

I checked the Eibach site but can't find the Sportline rates. Anyone know them?

I'd have no trouble using these on a convertible. Order away!

Re: UMI Releases New Product: 3rd Gen Lowering Springs

700lbs/in front and 80-137lbs/in rear. Prokit is a little stiffer at 714lbs/in front 109-177lbs/in rear.

To pointwerp, I wouldn’t use the sport line springs. They’re more about looks than performance. If I were to use an Eibach product it would be the prokit, backwards from most of their other offerings on other chassis but that’s the way it is with ours

pointhwerp 11-25-2018 08:43 PM

Re: UMI Releases New Product: 3rd Gen Lowering Springs

Thank you for your info/advice SilverChicken, I'll do more research, I may use the sportline and if I am not happy will swap over to something else, likely these. I have not had a sportline kit only prokits on my other vehicles in the past.

I want some lifting springs so I can run some decent mud tires. Any plans for such?

I have a BMR K-member and A-arms has anyone tried the weight jacks from UMI with this combination (I'm not opposed to grinding etc) -- @UMI Sales do you have the specs on the mating surface so I could measure before ordering... I had it in my shopping cart as well as a pan hard bar but... thought I should make sure first.

I will measure this weekend, I'll email you pics and measurements also.

With the ls1 up front my WS6 springs sit way to high. But since it's mostly street driven I don't want to make it too low so the weight jacks seem the best option.

Do you use the rubber isolator?

UMI Sales 01-10-2019 08:37 AM

Re: UMI Releases New Product: 3rd Gen Lowering Springs

We don’t use the isolator. Of course you can if you’d like.

Our rear kits include an isolator.

Sorry for the delay on this reply.

They're 18x9.5 with 5-1/8" BS and a 275/35-18 tire.

So did anyone end up with these springs? How’d you like them?

SilverChicken 02-11-2020 07:30 AM

Re: UMI Releases New Product: 3rd Gen Lowering Springs

I ended up going with 5.5x12” circle track springs up front so I could pick my own spring rates. Doesn’t sit quite as low as their car so not as cool looking for most of you guys but I was most concerned with rate, geometry, and clearance than looks. Out back I went with an adjustable spring spacer and 5x10.5” rear springs. Again, pick your own spring rate. I’m not knocking UMI’s product here by any means but if you’ve moved and removed a lot of weight in your car this may be more what you want to do.

not on this car it’s 100% 1987 original. Oem shocks and suspension. Only 13k miles on it and before I got it someone put inntrax 2” lowering springs on it. I have the oem spring (BZX and NNL) I was going to put back in but I thought going with a 1” or so lowering spring instead of that. Something subtle. I’m having trouble nailing down the exact factory springs rates and that’s preventing me from picking a spring to move forward with ATM. I think pro kit would be too stiff so it’s between these, the Hotchkis and the umi springs.

I have them on my 85. I did have to cut a 1/4 coil from the front to get it to sit where I wanted. I like them so far. I don't have much drive time but so far so good.

Thinking about getting these as well. My car is a cruiser that may see a couple of autocross events this season. I am coming from a caged, full suspension, drag oriented 4th gen and I like my cars to ride a little stiffer anyway. These springs sound like they may be what I am looking for.

these or the pro kit might be for you. I’m on stock shocks I’m not sure they’ll have the valving to carry a 200 weight spring out back and pro kit is 714/177.

im trying to confirm my factory spring rates and so far all my searches here haven’t been definitive. I hear 550 to 700lbs front and 107
to 200 out back. They are BZX and NNL.

I’d like to believe the aftermarket springs are more stiff than oem hence why they would enhance performance. If that’s true then I’ll opt for the hotchkis since I’m more interested in smoothness than pulling g’s.

I just put on the KYB Excel-G shocks so maybe that will play a part in which springs to run as well. I needed something to replace the worn out stock shocks so I opted for these since they were cheap and seem to get decent reviews. My car still is a little floaty and bouncy so I wanted to replace the springs to stiffen it up a bit.

im not an expert but you might have been better off getting adjustable Koni yellows. They ride firm and might have paired better with your springs than the kyb which certainly can’t hold a candle to the Konis. If you were happy with the ride height anyways, that may have been the better approach since kyb and springs would cost about the same as a set of Konis.

Not quite. I have less than $150 in my new shocks and springs are roughly $250 new. The Konis are $760 for the set.

Going in, I didn't plan to modify this car much at all. I just want it to ride and handle a little better than stock.

ah I forgot you didn’t get the adjustable kyb shocks and struts. That’s all the difference. Anyway I think UMI should just donate a set of springs to each of us for making this thread popular again lol

I'll be trying them out soon(UMI springs). Just waiting on some Koni struts to come back in stock.
