Still stumped...looking for help

I finished installing my 350 injectors and i did indeed find an o-ring/gasket package. Auto Zone sells em and theyre made by sorensen. its $30 for the whole kit - injector spacer, pod spacer, every gasket, and o-rings. No matter what they tell you and how ignorant they may be about TBI cars just ask for that package. I practically had to jump the counter and show the guy what i was talking about.

Anyways after the install i put in my 747 and mailorder chip. everything tightened up and started the car. Ran pretty good however the idle is STILL too high. It starts at about 1500 then drops to 1100 pretty quickly. its very solid and idles nicely without stuttering like it did before. BUT its still too high. Even after waiting for it to warm up or turning the AC on it is a solid 1000-1100 rpm. I have now swapped my knock/esc, injectors and ecm for 350 parts. Could it mostly be my idle screw? My auto teacher i had back in the day was helping me with the car awhile ago and he seemed to strip the idle screw so its very difficult to adjust now.

I still need to adjust timing. Its advanced about 6* right now, and needs to be returned to 0 (according to brian who burned my chip) Will this help my idle.

My other problem is that the car stutters and chugs when i get up to about 50-up mph. If i give it some gas it goes away but when i let off it chugs around and putters. I thought that was a fuel problem since it was running lean with the 305 injectors. That shouldnt be the case now.

I believe correct idle is 800 in park and 600 in drive correct? It idles high once i start it after its been sitting for a few hours but after i drive it around for a few minutes it idles at 800 and 600 like it should, very solid. I cant figure this one out.

btw which wire is it for the est bypass? I have no tan/black stripe wire by my valve cover. Does it have a big tan plastic casing? A pic would be really helpful.
thanks guys

There is a throttle body gasket set too, that is the same thing except doesn't have the regulator diaphragm. It sells for like $6.00. If I remember the part number is GP sorenson 96-3013A.

With the 7747 and a few of the other tbi ecms, theres no closed loop idle when the car is in P/N. The idle speed will be limited to 1400 rpm cold and 1000 rpm hot and thats it.

The chugging sounds like a possible fueling problem or a fault with the O2.

Avenger007 01-13-2005 03:33 PM

lol so i should just count on it to idle around 1000 cold. thats ok but wont it cause problems shifting into gear every time at that rpm?

I was considering the O2 as well. What kind of fueling problems were you thinking? My stock pump should be fine with just a LO5, right? The chugging never happened at any speeds with the stock 88 ecm/305 injectors but occured once i put in the 7747 and chip.

Any help with that est bypass pic?

Sounds like another bad chip. You cannot do mail order chip work. I bet the fuel and spark is either lacking or to much in the wrong areas.

Still stuck!!

Ok i set the timing to 0. idle is a little better at about 800-900. Runs very strong, however its raining so i cant do too much spirited driving since my tires are aweful.

Anyways i have all the 350 parts in and timing done...and it STILL chuggs and hesitates when i get up to anything past 50mph. Its really harsh. Im certain it has to be some sort of fuel problem.
-fuel pump (bad unit/old)
-fuel pressure (?)
-pressure regulator (bad unit, spring worn maybe)
-O2 sensor?

Any help is greatly appreciate and thanks for the est pics. The reason i couldnt find mine was because when the 350/ new harness was put in it got moved up farther near the top of teh passenger side corner, where it normally isnt at.

you sure you got it from autozone....cuz the zone sells Wells...and wells just sucks...i work at advance auto and we carry gp sorenson.....im just checkin cuz if u got wells....get that crap outt there...wells is junk and wears out fast

If it clears up when you get on the throttle, then it's not a lack of fuel (mechanically) becuase your actually giving the engine more fuel by way of AE and just moving up in the VE curve. So you have enough fuel mechanically but not electronically at light throttle. So that means that your chip is tuned incorrectly. You can either have your chip burner take another guess, or you can DIY and get it right.

Fast355 01-14-2005 12:39 PM

Positive. I work there and we sell GP Sorenson fuel parts. Atleast in Texas we do.

Avenger007 01-15-2005 06:19 AM

yes it was sorensen, judging from the giant letters across the big box :D I took pics of the kit and my injector swap in case of needing to show anyone.

"So you have enough fuel mechanically but not electronically at light throttle"

monte that sounds right because if I were to just hit the gas from a stand still and accelerate until 150mph it wouldnt hesistate or chug or anything. Its when i let off the throttle that it happens. Or if i get up to 50+mph and then let off a little and then partly give it a little bit of throttle it stutters pretty rough. This has ONLY occured after installing the 747/chip. I emailed brian and notified him.

I hate mail order setups, but my plans for a C950 ecm down the road would make $150+ in chip burning equipment as well as weeks/months of learning somewhat worthless. The car is a daily driver and will be seeing long distance trips and much more within a month or so. I just dont have time while working 3 jobs and full school load to work with the car's chip programming. :(

Should i try to DIY burn? Would this be a worthy investment given such a short time frame to execute anything proper

BMmonteSS 01-15-2005 09:03 AM

Tuning FI is universal. Your going to have to learn 90% of the same things with the holley setup that you would with the GM setup. Only burning chips and what particular maps are called are different. Granted the holley setup will be much simpler, why else do you want to go with the holley setup? The price difference is just alot for me to get over, but I'm cheap.

Avenger007 01-15-2005 02:16 PM

yup price is killer on those C950 units. I liked the real time setup and ease of learning. Plus Holley offers those downloadable presets/maps. However, ive learned that many of these can be had with regular chip burning through things like autoprom and what not. I def thinking about reconsidering. I just figured when i did a mpfi swap to holleys unit (with 4 barrel tb) it would make things easier and get my car on the road. That setup seems to be getting farther and farther away now though :(

Meantime brian is sending me a new chip, so ill see how it goes. If no luck...ill DIY

Fast355 01-15-2005 10:19 PM

I take it the 747 was out of a truck. Which one? All of the aftermarket chips I have seen stay pretty close to stock tuning and on a truck that is horrible. I was datalogiing mine when I was running TBI and @ 1/2 throttle in closed loop the timing would drop to (I'm not kidding) 0* Btdc. At 3,000 it would suddenly jump to 37*. Not the best thing for good overall driveability.

Avenger007 01-16-2005 12:11 AM

ya that sounds pretty harsh. the 747 was from an astro van but the chip is mail order. I had it tuned to my LO5 but its programmed too lean at certain points, causing that hesitation at partial throttle. currently, it also idles extremely rough for a second or two when i crank it in the morning. Feels good, like the car is a 600hp monster, but obviously not good for the car.

i get my new chip monday...if only the post office would ship faster.
