Cowl Induction Hoods

Ok, I’m curious to know who is running cowl induction hoods? Are they just for looks or do they really function? I have a TBI 305 (will replace with a 350 soon) and want to use a 2 inch cowl hood that works. Where do I go to get the initial set up for cowl induction? The rubber seals, Air filter, mounting plate etc? Can you use the 69 Camaro hardware?

Where did you get the large conforming rubber seal? I can't find it and I've been "looking" for over a year with no luck. I tried everywhere, industrial catalogs, hardware stores, specialty construction shops and contractors... nobody.
Oh, and I like your idea of using the stock air cleaner base, that would work really well. Does it have a small hole drilled to drain any fluids.

What i did,
i used my camaros bottom base air cleaner assumable,
then i got a 80's Caprice air cleaner lid i flip it upside down and plasma cut a nice smooth circle around it and used a strip to cover the sharp cut, then for the seal i used a 80's Caprice hood to cowl seal the part that keeps water out of the engine bay by the window i still have an extra one too, then it fits perfacty around the base of the air cleaner....

very simple....

That's a good idea. I didn't know the hood seals were that thick on some models, now I know, and knowing is half the battle... GI Joe.

pretty nifty seal you got there.

I just scooped up a 3" Jongbloed hood, and I have to rig up a seal for that thing now

Hmmm.....Ok. i guess Im wanting to know, if I can Adapt the 69 Camaro kits to the 3rd gen. Looking through the Classic Industries catalog I noticed they have all the cowl induction stuff off a 69 camaro. I'd like to use a K&N Xstream Air flow filter. Will these kinds of filters fit on the TBI base that I have?

It would be easy If I know someone who already had one and could use my tape measure to get all the numbers I need. Anyone? Anyone?

If you run a regular open cowl like mine (without the circle induction you'd have to fab a box, i have been considering it on mine but since i'm swapping a ls6 with a blower its kinda pointless to spend the time and money for me...Might do it just for kicks but you cna see in the pic, a guy out here ran a sheet around the base of the carb, in our case tbi, and then bent the sides up and contoured it to the curvature of the hood and then put a seal around it, that way it is only getting the air from the back of the hood.....if that makes sense, it take some fab skills but it looks mean:thumbsup:

It's not going to make a noticeable difference...

right now for my car it would not do anything its not a racer or a looker but its fun to mess with other then my PC and car i dont have much to do cause the only frien i knew for the last 6 years died on me a few months ago so to pss the time all i do is tinker with the pc and car

i was thinking of making my own cowl scoop at my fathers friends metal shop, i have a spare hood and we can work with metal pretty well and he is a great welder , i was thinking like irocbirdbuilder's hood but a arounded off 2 inch with the point at the end came together

it would prob be a lift off hood casue i dont think it would open much after the point so close to the glass =)

I cut down a 69 gasket, dropped in a K&N truck element and xtreme lid on my stock 88 TBI cleaner.

Really?
I guess someone forget to tell my Camaro that.
I picked up 4/10ths and 2 mph in the quarter after doing mine.
Granted it's carbed instead of TBI, but...

I used the stock base, blocked off original inlet, wrapped a couple layers of foam from an old chair cushion around it with enough height to seal to the hood, and a chrome 10½" lid. The scoop is a fiberglass 79Z28 style, covering the hole in the stock hood through which double-stacked filters protrude.

A little work will get you the flapper cowl hood with out spending an arm and a leg. Get an enclosed Cowl hood use the base LO3 air cleaner and a xstream filter some weather stripping some vaccum lines an old GM crusecontrol diafram a spring anf some thing sheat metal and a rod. Vaccum would keep the flaps on the cowl closed using the crusecontrol diafram and brathing out of the LO3 air cleaner base but when you step on it and drop the vaccum the spring would open the flaps. Bam cheap 70's flapper cowl. OR I have had one too many beers tonight.
