What are signs of a bad Timing chain?

The last time I went to the track I came back very disapionted becuase all i could get out of my RS was a 15.9 thats down from a 15.3. I then went to the shop close by becuase I had a rough idle and the oil presure kept bouncing up and down and they said it could be the timming chain. I also get no trouble codes and most of the sensors are close to new.

I could be wrong, but I've never heard of "signs" of a bad timing chain. They are either bad or good...and when they go bad you know it pretty quick.

If you don't know for sure if the car ever had a new one put in and it has over 100k on the clock, then you should consider getting it done

A problem that my father was having on his big block Chevelle (twice now) when his timing chain streched out, for some odd reason it would skip a gear throwing the timing off (20 or 35 degree's I can't remember) Then finally one day it just wouldn't start. I know this was a random story but it just might be the problem.

If you "jumped a tooth" on your timng gear, it would run bad, but usually, they either work, or they do not work. Pull the front off the motor, and replace it. It can be done for under 100 dollars, and in about 3 hours.
Hell, if you have the timing chain cover off you might as well pull the intake, and stab in a better cam.

If the chain is worn badly sometimes you can hear it slapping around, if you have over 100,000 miles I would say go ahead and change it. I have seen them get so loose that the chain slapped the timing cover and wore a hole in it causing a big oil leak.

Somtimes a timing light will help to show a worn chain. If your timing mark jumps around while the light is on it, the chain is loose. If your car has over 70,000, you can bet on your chain being sloppy.

Top Ten signs of a bad timing chain:

#10 - It comes in an engine that has the word "Hyundai" cast in it somewhere;

#9 - You shut off the engine on Saturday and the distributor finally gets around to stopping on Monday afternoon;

#8 - Your timing chain has been stretched out more than Madonna;

#7 - When you're not looking, it crawls off the sprockets and takes twenty minute breaks in the oil pan;

#6 - You wake up in the morning and find your timing chain sleeping with your wife;

#5 - Your ignition and valve timing reminds you of a kid with a Honda V-Tec that thinks his car is fast - really, really retarded;

#4 - Your chain has been off on an Extacy binge for six days straight;

#3 - The hookers in Times Square tell you "We would, but we don't want to get caught with someone with a timing chain like yours." ;

#2 - Your timing chain has appeared twice on "America's Most Wanted";

The number 1 reason your timing chain is bad - it was made by Fram.
