I would Like some advice on wether or not to get a 52 mm throttle body or not? I have read about people losing throttle response. I have pictures on how to run the true dual exhaust but i would like to know a good set of mufflers (i plan on no cats)? I would also appreciate any input on any of the parts listed above or if anyone has attempted to do this build before. I understand for the price of my build i could have a good 350 but I want to make the best N/A 305 I can for 10,000 or less (this price includes 1500-2500 in paint and 500 for sound). So essentially I have at least 7000 to spend on parts. I understand that 1990's camaro's are rare and I don't know if it would be best to get a second 305 so that the stock engine is "unmolested". If I am keeping all the parts that are removed off the engine will that be enough to retain the value? Open to all idea's. Thankx

The throttle body size is irrelevent (to a certain point with EFI). It can be as big as you want. It just becomes harder to control as you go to full load much sooner with a smaller engine due to the reduced airflow requirements. It also has an effect on the transient fueling requirements, but that can be taken care of in the tune.

Unless the current 305 is in good shape, you should go with a 350. Dont bother trying to rebuild it. Theres nothing you gain with a 305 other than a smaller bore. Its not like a 327, 383, or some other variant of a SBC through the years where you have a different stroke that alters the powerband and displacement. A 305 will only limit the heads and lift you can run. A set of AFRs or trickflows with a cam like the XE262 or 268-HR or another similar cam would make for a fairly good street engine. You could probably also use vortecs as well, but they will need some mods to go over .450" of lift. The cam there is kinda small for a moderate street engine, and would probably only deliver around 300 in chassis horsepower.

Re: 1990 Camaro TBI 305 Build Idea

Well thank you for the information. I appreciate it. As far as th car goes. It does have a strong 305 to it. With this car i plan on using it as a daily driver so the 300 to 350 horse range is perfect for me. I plan on buying a 67-72 Chevelle that is going to be my big mean street machine. With this car i would like some power but also retain the fuel economy to take this for a day trip and not go broke. I completely understand where you are coming from on the other small blocks where i can alter more things in the engine. Ideally i would like to build this car with a stock bottom end and to be fun to drive and hopefully to pass on to my kid when i have one. The purpose behind buying this car is i had a 1984 z28 h.o 305 and i learned to drive stick on that car in my parents driveway and it was my first car and unfortunately the engine seized and i never got to put it on the road. So to be hones this is my second chance at having my first car and i am a little older now and maybe a little wiser. Thank you again for the information

In my experience, Hawks stuff is overpriced in some areas. You might do better to shop before buying.
Also, if you are wanting high performance engine, ditch the 305 and go with a 350. You'll see alot more gains with a 350 once you get into the heads/cam part of the build than with a 305. Call Comp to decide on what you want on the cam, don't just pick one on your own unless you have done alot of research into how it will work with your intake, heads, exhuast, where you want to powerband, etc.
