Drop or non drop base open element

which whould be better, is there one that flows better or fit better. does one not need any mods like cables or anything. i read someone had a drop base and it was on his throttle cable. so a non drop one would be better??

Tas 12-24-2001 07:01 PM

non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop, non-drop,

TBI305Camaro 12-24-2001 08:19 PM

why non drop my drop works fine just sits alittle crooked hits the cable...not affecting anything tho

brodyscamaro 12-24-2001 11:17 PM

it doesnt matter that much

deadtrend1 12-24-2001 11:37 PM

i prefer non-drop. The drop base i had sat on my coil and i couldnt bend it out of the way. And it ws real close to my throttle cable.

TBI305Camaro 12-25-2001 12:09 AM

mine is nowhere near my coil but hitting my throttle cable....

deadtrend1 12-25-2001 01:02 AM

really, i guess i just had a crappy one, mine sat right on the plug wire on the coil, and was pressing against the 2 plugs for the ignition, and i couldnt do really anything about it. So i just got a non-drop. What kind is yours? Mine was a cheapy from a local store.

TKD89RS 12-25-2001 01:48 AM

is there a hood clearance problem with the non drop

Tas 12-25-2001 03:42 AM

Reasons for non-drop base:
What the hell is the point of lifting up a drop base air cleaner with a spacer ring?
The spacer ring shrowds the opening to the TBI creating a circular wall around it that only lets the air come from on top. From this direction the air also has the injectors in the way.

TBI305Camaro 12-25-2001 11:32 AM

so if i would get a non drop base i could remove the spacer ring? that seems like it would interfer with the coil and throttle cable way more than a drop base...

TKD89RS 12-25-2001 02:12 PM

is that true?

NJ SPEEDER 12-25-2001 02:18 PM

a non drop is the way to go. it will clear the coil and the throttle cable just fine. you will really see the difference once you do the ultimate tbi mods and see how smoothly the air can flow into the tb.

later

TBI305Camaro 12-25-2001 07:37 PM

with the non dropbase will i be able to remove the spacer ring? also will i still be able to fit my 3'' k&n element under there? i ned to get it offmy throttle cable or whichever cable that is because i think its messing with my shifts

yes with the non-drop base you remove the ring. 3" tall should fit if you don't have a TBI spacer.

TBI305Camaro 12-26-2001 10:33 AM

how much would just the non drop base run at a parts store?

j's92rs/z 12-26-2001 10:40 AM

I gave 20 bucks or something close to that for a mr.gasket non drop at autozone, it fits perfect, no rubbing

TBI305Camaro 12-26-2001 12:38 PM

i just got a mr gasket at the local speed shop for 20$ definetly get non-drop...doesnt rub against anything...sits flat, and you dont have to use the spacer ring so it flows better...youll have to disconnect the injector wiring and unscrew the bolt the wing nut goes on to make it alittle longer so itll fit but no big deal...ive had both the drop and non-drop and non-drop is definetly the way to go...i have a drop base and a lid now if anyone needs them just Email me,...

HrdRockA4305 12-27-2001 07:23 PM

I used to have a 14X3 drop base. It touched my coil wire and I didn't know it. 3 Months later it wore throught the coil wire and grounded through the metal base. !!ZAP!! It also grounded throught the base then the TBI itself to the engine... I'm lucky it didn't arc in the wrong places and start a fire. I now run a Weiand (sp?) raised-base 10X2, with the AIT sensor relocated inside of it like I did on the old one. Power seems the same, noise seems the same, but it dosen't touch anything and I can see more of my engine! Also cost about $10 less... I should have just got it in the first place.

BTW.. when it arced, it killed the car in a very busy intersection and I had to push it. Thats a dang heavy car to push and steer by yourself! It blew some wire under the car into 2 pieces, luckily that was all. Couldn't tell 'till it was up on a lift though. It also burned a nice little mark on the base there it hit the coil and where it arced to the TBI and fried the chrome off.

On a Camaro a non drop base will squish the top of a 3" air cleaner when you close the hood. A drop base Edelbrock 3" air cleaner assembly shuts fine. I have both and didn't like the way my hood pressed on the air cleaner assembly so I'm saving it for when I get my cowl induction hood. BTW the wires that connect to the remote coil will barely touch the edge of the air cleaner base. Just loosen the two coil mounting bracket nuts and move it away.

Tas 12-28-2001 12:58 AM

Mine barely fits too. Its not just a Camaro thing. I probably have less than 1/2" clearance. I had a drop base cleaner too. When I saw how stupid lifting up a drop base air cleaner was I took it back. I then took that one back. It had less of a drop but it was still a drop. The third time I got the flat base and got rid if the spacer ring. When I got a 3" filter for that flat base air cleaner I couldn't even get it on because the lid was slightly conical. The stock stud was too short so I fliped the lid up side down until I got a longer carb stud. Now everything fits fine, 14"x3" no problem.

TKD89RS 12-28-2001 02:34 AM

thanks for all the help guys, but i just went and bought a spectre air cleaner drop base and it barely touches the coil, but is on the throttle linkage, but it doesn't seem to interfere with it.

TBI305Camaro 12-29-2001 12:01 AM

you shouldnt have gotten the drop base...hitting the throttle linkage messed up my shifts bad...also made acceleration real wierd...and a 14'' non drop cleaner with a 3'' element fits under my hood fine...have plenty of clearance and it isnt squishing anything...it doesnt hit the coil, and clears the throttle linkage with no problems at all.

TBI305Camaro 12-29-2001 12:03 AM

jusr read your post about needing a longer stud...my k&n lid is higher in the middle...all i had to do was unsrew my stud some and it was fine...dont see why you had to buy a new one...

Tas 12-29-2001 12:08 AM

I unscrewed it all I could. It was still short. Every brand is different.

jagone 12-29-2001 09:34 PM

I used the Edelbrock Elite triangle filter, PN# 4222. It is a non drop unit, comes with a K&N filter, and doesn't even come close to rubbing the coil wires. I was able to remove the spacer ring and I removed the hood seal to allow it to hopefully suck in a little cool air from outside. I have this unit on both my 90 and 91.
The 91 is an auto and the 90 is a 5spd, the non-drop base doesn't interfere with any cables on either car. The breather bolts right on to the stock breather bolt and there is absolutely no hood clearance issues, there is actually more clearance than the stock piece. These breathers look really sharp and when you floor it, it sounds like a jet under the hood.

TBI305Camaro 12-30-2001 12:36 AM

you had any problems with water getting on your coil and stuff...been thinking aboyt removing that seal but i dont know yet...couldnt water mess it up? i guess a cowl induction would be way worse about it and i plan a cowl someday...

So you can put a 3" tall air filter on and still be able to secure the lid useing the stock stud. Otherwise, if you put on a non drop air cleaner you will have to invert the air cleaner lid to secure it or buy a longer stud.

i have had no problems with it

jagone 12-30-2001 10:20 PM

No problems whatsoever.

TBI305Camaro 12-31-2001 11:55 AM

with a mr gasket non drop base and a k&n lid my stock stud worked fine...just has to unscrew it some but worked fine...i might go ahead and remove my lining i guess i could always put it back if i have problems
