good and bad news..
 

well after tracking a lifter peck forever i decided to yank the engine and see whats going on.... (see previous threads for details)

well after we got the engine out we pulled the pan and caps to find devistation.......

the bearings where cut down to the copper like a ring around it, but the other part of certain bearings where fine.... we started to examine the throws and mains on the crank and found little burrs in the oiling holes that scat didn't get during the maching process.....

well i contacted my company i purchased these products through and they are going to pay to have the crank turned and send me new bearings........

but i still cannot figure out why those burrs didn't come out when the crank was cleaned???? i scrubbed that sucker for a good thirty min in the tub and it still done this...... why?

please whatever you do make sure to check every little nook and cranny of the motor before assembly twice or you will end up like me, out 500 for a bottom end redo.....

did you check it for burrs? that would of been a good idea. if the cross drilled holes aren't chamfered it's a good idea to do it, and deburr. if they are chamfered there shouldn't be a burr to cause a problem. remember way back when you first posted this and you were told your parts weren't the best pieces to be running? it's still true.

you know ede, i wanted to give scat the benifent of a doubt, but after speaking to the scat peopl, i have to agree that they suck with a vengance! i am sorry for ever of hearing from scat period!

the burrs we found in the oiling holes where still attached inside them and where about to break off, so even a brush wouldn't have disloged them before assembly.....

i just hope that theres someone here thats in the process of buliding a motor with scat stuff and thinks about it when they start assembly, and then makes absolutley sure they check it before they assemble....... sorry about the rant and i hope that no one has to experiance this in their buildin lifetime... lesson learned!

There is something that "Just ain't right" (as my dog would say) with a Chinese crank in an SBC V-8...

i think it's valvetrain related.

but damn.... looks like i'll be staying away from scat next motor i do. stay away from summit's cranks, too. they're made by scat.

That's weird. I've always heard good things about Scat. Even many books I've read highly recommend them.

Oh well, I was planning to use Eagle.

well, it's not so much the quality of the crank itself, but the ****ty finishing work by scat....... the problem was they didn't get some burrs in the oiling holes on the throws and mains.... they ended up breaking off and the oil drgged them right to the berings where a sort of domino effect occured.... one bearing got eat up, then the metal from that bearing went on to the next and so on........

just if ya get a scat or any crank, try your best to clean the parts througholy in every little way......... and especially the oil feed holes, and if it has burrs that will not come out, then send it back.... because 9 out of 10 times they will come out once it's running and kill the bearings.....

The Scat is probably as good (in quality) as a factory nodular crank. But you'll still want to treat it like anything else you'll assemble into your work. Like BadGTA said, check the finish, polish it yourself, look at the trim of the weights, casting flash, parting lines, etc. Check the bolt holes in the output flange, snout. Look at the keyways.
