Sound

Whenever my car is cold, I get a clicking sound when I'm between 3000 and 4500 RPMs. The sound goes away after a couple of seconds.

Whats the deal???

mhm I never exceed 2000 when my engine is cold. Its better not to "hit the pedal to the metal" when ots cold.

I dont usually gun it when its cold, but when your late for school, you have no choice!

Anyways, its definately coming from the engine...last time I heard this sound, it meant a new 2.8 for my old Firebird, however, thet time it was clickin all the time.

My 84' does the same thing and i have not been able to trace it yet. I live in wyoming so it is usally cold around here. i ALLWAYS warm up my car before i go anyware, even if it means getting up earlier. My Z28 usally idles between 1500-2000 Rpms. Then i afyter the temp reaches 160 minumum, i punch the gas and the rpm's drop off the high idle. (That way i don't hurt the transmission when i put it in Drive) But i am still looking for this nocking sound! Anyone have any clue as to what it could be?

Hmmm...Reminds me of an old '86 s-10 Blazer I used to have with the 2.8. She would make the most annoying racket (a clicking or tapping) until warmed up, and then I could still hear it some when I got on it. It was broken bolts on the exhaust manifold at the passenger side. It ran (and still runs) that way for years. Just something to check, because it usually gets better when the engine is warmed.

ive got the same thing too...sounds like it might be in the flywheel/converter/trans area but i just have no clue what it is

i wouldnt rule out a high pressure exhaust leak. once the engine warms up it could cause the gasket to expand and properly seal it. but while its cold it could not be sealing it properly. good luck

Sounds like I can join the club too- I get that 'clatter' noise whenever the car's cold and it's been running for about 10 seconds. The noise runs for another 10 seconds while I'm waiting for the car to warm up then it goes away. Doesn't do it any other time. I had disconnected my heat riser valve (vaccuum operated) for a while and the noise went away- when I reconnected it it seemed to return....
