Thou Shalt Not Whine
 

Spring is almost here, and It won't be long before I'll have to run the A/C in my IROC continuously. I have a problem with the system though. When idling and A/C compressor running a noise that could be described as a low pitch whine or moan can be heard. I beleive I know the source of the noise, it's the hose running from the power steering pump to the steering gearbox. The compressor causes the pump to vibrate, and the hose oscillates in air creating the sound.

There's a TSB on this, 88-409-1B which says to put a brace between the A/C bracket and water pump. The brace p/n 10055819, unfortunately is discontinued and no longer available. SOL? Anybody have an alternative solution or suggestion? Thanks.

Why not take measurements from bolthole to bolthole? Then you could take it to a machine shop and have a custom one made. Probably wouldnt cost anywhere near as much.

Thanks for the response. The hole on the alt bracket has to be drilled. Anyway I found the part at a Chevy dealer in Chicago.

If that doesn't work out just keep in mind that oscillating noise problems can often be solved more easily by changing the offending part's oscillation frequency than by additional bracing. How to do this? Change it's weight! Maybe hose-clamp some additonal hose around the outside of the existing power steering hose, adding mass and lowering it's oscillation frequency below that of the compressor vibration at idle.

Also, remember that a power steering pump on the way out can also cause noise like you describe.
