my 84 t/a i'm redoing is getting a 350 basic. will unpluging the computer do anything to the dash components. and if i took it out now with the 305 factory that's in it now will it have any effect. just so you know the electronics in the carb are unplug now. it runs better without.

None of the gauges are run by the computer, but the torque converter lockup is. There is a speed sensor on the back of the speedo, the computer uses that to determine when to lock the TC. If it's a manual trans car, then disregard.

Unplugging it causes the carb to run full-rich. Unplugging the 3-wire TPS switch will command full rich on the Mixture Control Solenoid, but the MCS will continue to meter. Unplugging the MCS will pull the rods out of the primaries and fuel will dump into the motor.

It's likely running better unplugged (at least at idle) because some sensor or adjustment was out of whack. Carb may need to be rebuilt as well.

Replacing the carb requires replacing the distributor as well. The stock dist is also computer controlled for timing advance. You'll also need a means to lock the converter. None of the dash gauges are controlled by the ecm. You may also lose cruise control.

The system you have, when operating properly, would work well on a 350.

thanks for your replies now i will not try that lol. The 350 i would like to build i want to get away from all the computer controlled parts. and the carb with the wires pluged in runs like crap. with the wires unplugged it does run a little rich witch causes my plugs to foul out.

What could cause the above problem with wires plug into carb. Carb does have a rebuild done to it.

ok i have got my engine out and now i'm ready to get rid of some of the computer wires i dont need. I'm only keeping basic wires. Would it be okay just to cut the wires i'm not going to use or should i cut the wires plus take out the computer. And will my temp gauges and stuff still work. Also before my temp gauge and oil pressure gauges do not work, is there any way to test them now that i have no motor in my car?
