VATS help

i got a 89 iroc, 700r4 and seems like my injectors arent pulsing and from reading on this website found out that VATS could be the problem. so i want to check if it is but idk how or wat wires to check
heres a pic of under my steering column could somebody tell me what wires to check?
thanks, any help is much appreciatedhttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...r007/photo.jpg

Re: VATS help

Having just gone through this myself, I'll be happy to offer any info that I can.

First, you need to check your 'idiot light' that says SECURITY. If VATS does not see the correct resistance in your key chip, the SECURITY light will remain lit after you turn the key to the ON position. If it does see the right resistance, the SECURITY light will go out after 2-3 seconds with the key ON.

If VATS is working normally, it will then enable the starter relay and also send a square wave signal to the ECM.

The picture you posted does not clearly show the VATS wire, but mine was two thin white wires inside an orange sleeve. It looks like that heavy orange 'wire' in your picture may in fact be the sleeve over the two white wires. There would be a plug there somewhere which you would disconnect to try to bypass the key circuit with a simple resistor.

So, if your SECURITY light stays lit, then you have to try the resistor bypass procedure. If it goes out after a couple of seconds, then playing with resistors is not going to help you. In that case, you have either a VATS module problem, or an ECM problem, or a wiring problem between the two.

Let me know what's up.

yea that orange cable in the pic does have the 2 wires in it with the connector at the end
and thanks for the info i will check that 'idiot light' tomorrow morning and see if it turns off because i haven't checked and i'l post whats up with that

ok just checked and the light does stay on what kind of resistors do i get?

Re: VATS help

Well, before you do that, do you have a spare key? It may be that your key chip is not right... or that it needs to be cleaned...

If so, it may just start with the spare key. Sometimes the contacts inside the lock go bad...

If no spare key, you could get one made (a good idea) at ACE hardware using the code on the key itself.

If all else fails, the code on the key should tell you the resistance of the key chip --

In the absence of the code, you need to get all of them and try them one at a time. Naturally, mine turned out to be #15.

Radio Shack sells a huge bag of resistors for about $12. Everything you need is in there, but you may have to combine a couple in series for some values.

Well... don't keep us in suspense... what did you find?

Re: VATS help

got the ohms off the key, went to radioshack got the matching resistors and then i cut that orange sleeve and hooked it up to those two wires and then she fired right up!
