fuel pump/gas tank removal HELP!!!!
 

wow, the search didnt help me with my problems
and i got the dealer service manual and it has CRAP about taking the tank out

lets start at the begining friends

soooo my nice expensive exhaust i had made was TOTALY WELDED soooo i had to hack it into 1,000,000 pieces to get it off, what is kinda ok because i need an excuse to get a hooker areo chamber system :nod: but still made me :gocrazy:

and man i LOVE third gens but WHY do you have to take the whole car apart to take the gas tank out ill never know had to take the nice UMI panhard bar down, the panhard brace out, my old exhaust out, disconnect all the stupid fuel return and emissions lines and it still will not come out, bend the hangers back and you may be able to get the pickup out, pry cuss and bend stuff and the fuel tank finnaly comes out, now i will have to bend the fuel neck back proper to get it back in

sooo my questions are

1~ its a PITA to get the pickup/pump out with all the room in the world, how does the cutting a access panel help there its not as simple and opening the panel and pullin it out im sure

2~ how the hack do i get it back in without taking the rear end out

3~ how does this "O" ring go back on properly, the jack legg that did the pump before me didnt do it right and you could never fill the car up

4~ its GOT to be in the DSM somewhere, but WHERE on how to do this

ok gas tank is in 6C-7 of DSM and it wants you to lower the axle, so i guess i HAVE to do that after all to get the tank back in :gocrazy:

its really not that hartd to get out, expecially if all the suspension parts are new and the bolts have been apart recently. The trick is to drop the axle as far as you possibly can, which means unbolting the shocks from the axle, the sway bar links and the bolt holding the brake like the body just before the flex line to get a little more play in the line. With the axle low enough, it all comes out pretty easily.

1. With the tank out, the pickup come out with little drama. I dont see the issue. when the access panel is made, the fuel lines are all cut a few inches back from the lock ring and spliced together later. thats the part most people fudge.

2. get what back in? the tank or the sender? how did you get it out? just reverse the process.

3. the o ring goes under the lock ring, on the plate at the top of the sender doesnt it? its been a while i dont remember.


so you are saying you have the suspension all assembled and a new exhaust welded in and you never put the tank it?

no i just hacked up my exhaust to get it out

i figured the o ring goes under the pick up, i guess it just sits there

im not about to hack the car up to get the fuel pump out "easier" i had tried with the tank "drooped" down and couldnt get it out thats when i had to take the entire tank out

o well, drop the axle AGAIN, lol i just did that 2 years and 4,000 miles ago to put a new rearend and all in it :gocrazy:

o well was hoping there was an easier way

Actually, it is as simple as pulling it out as you would after taking out the tank, but instead of taking out the tank you just open the access door. Yes, it is that simple.
There are many members who have removed the tank to replace the pump. Some say it's easy, some difficult, some in between, but it's definitely time consuming, makes you say words you didn't you knew about automotive engineers born out of wedlock.
With an access door it's a breeze.

I replaced my pump a 6 months later it went out so I replace it with a Holley red pump to keep from pulling the tank again

how did you set that up, did you have to remove the factory pump and put a carb style pick up on it or what not
i may do what you did if it seem to work for me

im not cutting a hole in my floor :nod:

I left ever thing in the tank and installed a in line pump and I have a 377 with a 750 carb if you have a Throttle Body that pump may work but if you have tuned port then you will need a pump with more fuel presser

i don't think it's possible to take the tank out without dropping the axle.

i read that in the FSM and didn't believe it. after replacing my fuel pump with a truckload of expletives, yup, you gotta drop the axle, which is simpler than it sounds.

just disconnected the lower end of the shocks and let it swing down. loosened a brake line bracket also. i can't remember if i disconnected the panhard bar...

All you had to do was unbolt the cat (if you can) swing the exhaust out of the way, drop the tank onto the exhaust, get it to where you can get your arms in there and get the sucker out. After doing it a few times I can replace a pump in 2 hours, no cutting required, being skinny helps a lot too

I have a 91RS the the PO converted to carb. Does this mean i can just install a line pump and leave everythin alone down there?

Lots of people say no but I'm on my fourth pump and this time I did cut a hole for the removal of it. Going to put a trap door in and future replacements will take a half hour to do. Do it clean and it is not visable and a Hell of a lot more practical.

Is it possible to cut the filler neck and reattach it with some flexable hose so you can install it with out removing rear axle?

I did it to a new tank. There's no way you can cut it in place without getting metal dust from the cut into it, wouldn't want that in your new pump now would'ya.

Besides, you don't need to remove the rear end, just let it swing down out of the way.

I am also replacing a fuel pump finally got the tank out but how does the pump come off the tank on a 86 Iroc Z and I havent got the new pump yet there the outside ring on the tank what tools do need remove the pump thanks for your help never change one of these

Use a Brass punch and hammer and tap the tab off the ring until it slides in a position to allow to come off. If you've never done it before it appears confusing to the eye. If no brass punch is available then cover a steel punch with a rag,{ to reduce the chances of making a spark]

I have found that adding a small amount of Marvel Mystery oil to the gas will greatly increase the Life span of Chevy pumps, I also have a Chevy Suburban that would routinely blow a pump every two years! Now that I have been using M.M.O on a regular basis I have three years on the last one I installed!

According to some one who was a service manager in a GM dealer in the 90's he claimed that they put out a service bulletin to advise people to put a Qt of A.T.F in their tank every third fill up to increase pump life?

I cheated and cut the gas filler neck with a hacksaw. Then when I reinstalled it, i had a short piece of gas filler hose like all cars from the 60's and earlier used.

wow guys due to not enough free time and my boat (you know Bust Out Another Thousand) i just got it reinstalled saturday and it was a bigger PITA to put in

next time im paying someone to do it

but get this i was very happy to get 20 MPG on a 120 mile mixed driving trip ...... better than my 4cyl ranger D.D. :gocrazy:

I got it off my wife did want me blow up with gas tank but couldnt find a brass punch anywhere and are all fuel pumps the same ?? I wanted a good and one that will last the one from Autozone are covered for only one year the one from advance auto are covered for two years are they all the same???

I did exactly that, makes dropping my tank way easier. Its now a half hour job with the axle staying in place.

if I were doing this my stock 55chevy belair has big rubber hose spacer to connect the neck to the gas tank but the tail pipes are not close to it but they might be on a third Gen and I would use a good grade of rubber hose and dont go cheap here get the best you can get

I made the cut about 2-3 inches down the neck from the filler opening. There's an access panel on the inside on the fender. Couple screws and it pops out and gives you all the access to the filler neck you need. I just cut the neck with a pipe cutter, and butted it back together and used a short piece of fuel filler hose and a couple hose clamps to reconnect it. Theres a vent tube inside the neck that needs to stay in place. If you feel around the neck youll find a spot weld that holds the vent tube in place. Cut just above that and you wont have problems.

I think so, as far as parts stores go? Next time I'll try a Holley or some other better brand.

Thats a horrible idea. Pulling fuel through a dead pump will put a LOT of extra strain on the external pump and greatly decrease its life expectancy. If you swap to an external pump, you need to remove the intank pump and swap to a carb pickup, or mod your pickup (theres a sticky on exactly how to do that).
