Coolant sensors.. I have two..

Well, I know one probably sends the signal to my gauges and the other to my ECU but which is which?

(standing in front of my car looking back) One is located on the front drivers side of my engine and the other is located on the back passengers side of my engine.

I thought the one on my passenger side was my knock sensor, proceeded to unscrew it and well I'm sure you know coolant shot out of it.

And I also need to know what the wire looks like that goes to the one on my passengers side. (a picture would be great if you could give me one)

Thanks for all the help.

The two on the front of the tpi intake in 88 the rh one is the cold start timer switch the one on the lh is the cts.

The knock sensor is in the block directly below that unit in the head and even more coolant will come out when you remove it

Lmfao, looking forward to it. Well I have plenty of coolant so not to worried about that. I don't even know if that's the piece that was bad now, I bought the part already so I'm either going to replace the knock sensor, or take it back and buy the CTS or whatever the other coolant thing is on the passenger side.

Then again, I think I may just buy both, the car is extremely old and I think it can use these parts :) Not to sure how it would run without them (they currently all are unplugged and pretty much broken) but I'm pretty sure Chevy didn't just put them on there for fun :D

Yeah man, It was the second link you gave me. My engine is an 305 TBI. Would you happen to know what the pigtail looks like?

What kind of effect would this have on my engine since there was no chords going to it and it was broken.

and can I test the one on my drivers side for a specific voltage to see if its good or not? I ask because I don't know which gauges work and which do not.

Thanks for the help

Thanks, I usually get my things from advanced auto parts because its literally right up the street. So Ill most likely be heading up there today see if I can get these parts.

It was idling weird, I bought a new IAC it idles great now. Now its showing the signs of a bad knock sensor (lots of fumes, I push the pedal down and it wants to sputter, but just a small amount). And there is a small knocking sound. It's an inconstant knock so I don't think its any of the engine components (Pistons, rocker arms, etc.) Hopefully these pieces will fix it.

Ill be back either way.

your car will not go into closed loop without the input of the cts sensor. I would repair that first. Knocking or a tapping sound cannot be fixed by changing sensors if you have a mechanical issue. If its pinging I would dis connect the est and set the timing. If this ect sensor has been busted for a long time I would install a new oxygen sensor it maybe lazy from its age.

Um, can you possibly give me a link to another post that describes how to set the timing?

It also may be another issue? When I put my headers on I needed to change the spark plug wires around so they wouldn't hit. I was told that if you change them around to where say the longest one (meant to go to the front spark plug) to the back spark plug it would mess something up.

The sound sounds like a shoe in the dryer or something. Its not a consistant tapping like: tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, all in a row. More like tap, good, good, tap, tap, good, good, good, good, tap, tap, tap, good, tap. Lol that's the best way I can describe this. I would take a video of it, but my car is to loud to even hear it through a video.

This happens only when its idling by the way, when you give it gas you cant hear it, when its driving you cant hear it, just idling.

I would first think exhaust leak than.

Well I really don't think it is an exhaust leak. The reason being I just installed a brand new one :).. Still, that doesn't mean it couldn't be that. If it was though, I would have to put my money on the headers, maybe the gaskets arent good enough?

Maybe something is just loose and rattling around somewhere, who knows? lol. Ill find out one day when I'm driving and all I hear is *BOOM* and my engine seizes up.

By the way, when I took my sensor out, the coolant kind of had the scent of fuel on it?! Is that even possible, or is that normal?

Tuned Performance 02-09-2012 02:52 PM

Re: Coolant sensors.. I have two..

Fuel is not going to get into the cooling system unless someone pored it in there. If it was oil you would have a blown head gasket and would see milky engine oil and or white smoke out the exhaust. So who known what you were smelling in the antifreeze.
