SBC engine ID

Hi

I'm an Aussie who just bought a 2nd hand ski boat.

The various engine block stampings are:

GM5.7LG SGI
14093638
Casting: V08314MB

The nastyZ28 website tells me this would be a 350...87-95...2 or 4...Roller or flat tappet cam, one-piece rear seal.

BUT

What of the engine casting? I can decode as far as: Flint assembly plant, manufactured on 3 August 1994. The nastyZ28 database suggests the "MB" suffix would place the motor in the vintage of 1967-68.

Doesn't compute. Anyone shed any light please?

V = Flint engine plant.
0831 = Aug 31
4MB = What it came from

Since no suffix code starts with a 4, it must be something else.

CMB is from a 1991 TPI L98

I am thinking MB probably stands for Motor Boat aka long blocks shipped to marinizers like Mercruiser, Volva Penta and the like. Similar markings are used on Industrial engines and the GM Crate engines. I bet if you pulled a valve cover you would find it has 217 heads and if you dug deeper into it a 395' camshaft.

I understand the "4" means it was built in 1994.

Re: SBC engine ID

Since the boat is a 1995 it follows that the motor is a crate engine.

I was hoping to find out from the codes some more details without pulling it to bits (I'm not a mechanic)

Such things as 2 or 4 bolt mains, what sort of power output it might have, etc. Forgot to mention it has centre bolt heads.

Of course the clever thing to do would be to ask the boat manufacturer. Maybe I'll try that.

Thanks all.

Build year is never included with the suffix codes.
