Gas cap options for aftermarket fuel tanks

Figured I'd throw this out there and see if anyone has had luck finding a gas cap that will thread onto an aftermarket gas tank. I bought a tank from 1A Auto years ago and it went in pretty well. Same filler neck angle issues as most people but not enough to keep it from working. My issue is I cannot get a gas cap to thread on easily for the life of me. Ended up shaving the threads down quite a bit in order to be able to get it started, but the threads on the neck are either wrong or just plain bad. It gets real snug after a half turn and the over-tightening relief kicks in and the cap just clicks before its down all the way. I stuck a screw in a tester cap to keep it from doing that, and have run it this way for about a decade with no leaks or anything. But there has to be a cap out there for another application that would fit better. I may just go to O'rielly's one of these days and try out a few different caps. Sucks having to fumble with it at the gas station. Mods feel free to move if this is in the wrong forum. Thanks!

I ran into this on my Dorman tank also (which had no problems at all with filler neck angle, etc). I shaved the threads on the stock cap and it works fine. But I have since learned that *apparently* a 4th gen cap is what you need for the aftermarket tanks. They weren't manufactured wrong, they were made for a different cap entirely it seems. I haven't tried this myself as my shaved thread cap works just fine for me, but if I think about it I may order up a newer cap at some point.

I'll give that a shot!

Doing a little poking around looks like 82-97 gas cap is technically the same, and 98+ went from threads to tabs, totally different. I’m going to swing by the parts place this week and just try a few until I find one that fits. I’ll post up the findings. Both of my cars have an aftermarket tank, and neither one has a cap that fits without modification.

You might send an email to Dorman and ask them what fits. They are the one's that likely made your tank. All the other brands are just relabeled Dorman usually.

Found a perfect fit today. Tried it on both of my cars with aftermarket tanks and it works flawlessly. Stant 10826, crosses to a gates 31676 or Delco 12F52. Can not speak for the last two as I did not physically try those, but I purchased a few spares to have for the future! Hope this helps.

Thanks! That's excellent information!

Here's the ACDelco version. Seems to fit a lot of Chevy products from 1995 to as late as 2012.

I noticed that too. We had a 986 Porsche in the shop today and it needed a new cap, and when it came in I tried it on the cars. Fit perfectly.

A gas cap by any other name... The Gates and Delco caps are both made by Stant, so they're all three the same cap in different packages. Notice the Delco and Gates have the Stant "S" molded into them.

I still say if a person is going to replace a gas cap, the first stop should be the counter at your local convenience store. Ask the Counter-Gargoyle if they have a gas cap - Lost & Found they'd mind if you raid. If it's like most convenience stores, people leave caps behind all the time and NO ONE ever comes back for one. Thus there are almost always 3+ under the counter, in the way, forever cluttering up the joint. Said Counter-Minion might even be touched, and break into tears of happiness at the mere prospect of ridding their domain of a forgotten gas cap. Second only to breast cancer awareness pink ribbon and yellow ribbon magnets in the automatic car wash... Adopt a 'rescue-cap'.

Yeah I suspected that Stant was the manufacturer for all of them. Their products are hit-and-miss in my experience. Sad that you can't really buy quality factory parts anymore.

Ya, I posted the cross reference numbers for ease of locating the right one. They might be the same cap physically, but multiple vendors sell them, at different prices.
Most chain parts places don’t do the bargain bin thing anymore. I spoke with our district rep from O’riellys and he confirmed. Otherwise I’d have done that a long time ago. This settles a long standing issue for me. I hope it does the same for someone else.

When you install a new gas tank do you paint the exterior of the tank? My new tank has a coating of some kind on it. If it needs paint what type is best?
Thanks,

The ACDelco 12F52 fit perfectly. Looks to be made by Motorad as it has a big M in the center. Definitely not rebranded Stant.
