Best aftermarket 427 crate motor Hello gents A close older retired friend has a tired non-numbers matching 350 in his 62 Corvette roadster. He actually has the backing of the Director of the Bureau of Household Affairs to buy a 427 crate engine (Unfortunately this truly is NOT me) The budget is $10,000 for a turn key pump gas carbureted Dyno tested engine. It’s use would be 99% street, keeping the 3:08 rear end & close ratio 4 speed Muncie. It also presently has 1 3/4” headers with 2 1/2” bumper exit exhaust. I have not heard all together positive things about crate 427’s from CNC or Blueprint Engines or even SUMMIT or Jegs for that matter. My personal opinion is that it should be a Dart block with AFR 210 Eliminator heads and hydraulic roller cam approx in the 230 at .050” range with a the true 10 to 1 compression ratio & a mech sec QFT carb, keeping a Performer RPM air gap for hood clearance I’m thinking for the rotating assembly...Scat crank, rods?, D cup reverse dome pistons to match the AFR chambers? Any sage advice from you guys would be appreciated. I’m sure something’s left out here, hope you get the idea. Looks like I’m living vicariously through this guy! Thanks |
Re: Best aftermarket 427 crate motor You cant go wrong with a GM performance parts crate motor - there are a bunch to pick from https://www.gmperformancemotor.com/ |
Re: Best aftermarket 427 crate motor Sorry, SMALL block 427. |

Re: Best aftermarket 427 crate motor Great idea, that 383 would definitely surpass the aged but built 355, but it’s just not the cubes & horsepower he wants. |

Re: Best aftermarket 427 crate motor Call this guy and find out who should build it: https://hinksonautomotive-cncblocks.com He does some really nice work and has a great reputation around the forums, etc. I've seen several of his builds and the dyno results. |
Re: Best aftermarket 427 crate motor QwikTrip, Another excellent idea, but he wants to stay old school sbc. GeneralDisorder, Sounds very much like competent qualified builder out there, but the owner resides in the NW suburban Chicago area. I have heard good things about Opel Engineering in the past. |

Spent some time on the dyno yesterday on a SBC 427 build for a good friend of mine. He wanted a SBC with BBC torque down low for his street build. This engine laid out some impressive numbers. Was a very efficient engine only required 32 degrees of timing it did not like 34 degrees and it did not like 30 degrees. This is what I came out with and it was no budget build LOL. This is also on my F/B page with a lot of pics of the build https://www.facebook.com/cncblocks.n...85?pnref=story This will be the only one of these I will build I can take it off my bucket list as I have wanted to this build for a long time and it came out as planned. Dart SHP block 3.875 stroke X 4.185 bore sonic tested 3 blocks and this one was the best one . Callies Comstar crank Scat I beam rods 6.0 Custom Wiseco dished pistons. Ultradyne HYD roller on a GM step nose core I used the GM spider and GM roller lifters reduced the base circle to 1.050 Lifters were quiet block need no oiling modification LOL AFR 210 heads 75 CC chambers Eddy Air Gap intake 750 Quick fuel carb, Wanted to go to a bigger High speed air bleed but the customer said leave it alone it was fine. Scorpion 1.5 rockers Champ 8 quart pan 10552 Oil pump https://i68.tinypic.com/fp2g48.jpg https://i68.tinypic.com/e5jw3b.jpg https://i63.tinypic.com/29uvc49.jpg |
Re: Best aftermarket 427 crate motor Keep the bore abit smaller and do a 415-421. Basically same thing lol get alittle more life out of it |

Re: Best aftermarket 427 crate motor |
Re: Best aftermarket 427 crate motor Thank you all above for the info. To steer clear of small base circle cam requirements/lifter pressure angle issues of a 427 sbc, the owner will most likely now be simplifying things with a Dart SHP 400” short block with their cast crank, I beam rods etc. Existing RPM air gap & 750 vac sec QFT carb. AFR #1038 195’s & a David Vizard spec’d Lunati # DV278-06RH hyd roller cam. LSA-ICL 106*/104* 227*/227* .545”/.545”. Or, a locally built SHP-based OPEL Engineering 400” short block. |
Re: Best aftermarket 427 crate motor Dont put a cast crank in a dart block lol if you spend the money put a decent crank in. They aren’t much more |
Re: Best aftermarket 427 crate motor Orr89RocZ Agreed, but they come that way from Dart as the entry level 400” short block, with the forged crank etc as an option. Do you think a hopefully, 400hp 5500 rpm combination with a 4 Spd & 3:08 rear end in an old C1 would absolutely require such a bulletproof upgrade? It probably would be a wise move, even if it never sees a track. |
Re: Best aftermarket 427 crate motor If 400 HP is all you seek, just put a 350 roller in it. Save the rest of the money for a nice fuel injection setup. GD |
Re: Best aftermarket 427 crate motor GeneralDisorder, The owner doesn’t really text, so a even self learning EFI might be a bit too much. He’d rather stay old school with his 750 vac sec QFT & Performer RPM air gap & discontinued Mallory ign. |

Re: Best aftermarket 427 crate motor Orr89Rocz You mean, Scat good, Eagle not so much? |
Re: Best aftermarket 427 crate motor They are all coming out of China (the blanks anyway) these days. From what my machinist tells me - it's the final machining that's usually a problem. If it all gets checked out and "adjusted" if it's not perfect they are fine. There's plenty of people making high power on both. I have a customer with a 700 HP 2.0 liter engine running an Eagle crank. Forged of course. |

Re: Best aftermarket 427 crate motor There are USA made crankshafts. I would chose one of those those over the best Scat products. Correct me if I'm wrong but Scat seems to be at the best of the budget end. Add even 50% to the crank cost and amortize that over the cost of the build and it doesn't add up to much. |
Re: Best aftermarket 427 crate motor MorTorqe try this http://www.nyesautomotive.net/427_550_HP.html I might be ordering their 406 sbc with EFi next year. would upgrade the crank/rods to Callies and go with the 2000 rod bolt upgrade also. |
