1984 firebird needs new heads any thoughts on replacements v8 305 4barrell carb

Hey guys so after trying to troubleshoot my 1984 firebird, finally was told the heads where bad and I had low compression on 2 cylinders, I was looking for aftermarket heads that will be direct fit and give a little boost in horse power I’m in California so I need to be able to smog it but not sure where to start a shop was charging me 1000 to rebuild the heads but I think it will be better just to replace them, I am not looking for insane power just being able to drive it daily and maybe get up to 200 horse power any help will be appreciate it thanks

For a little more money you can get a new L31 350 motor from summit

The L31 will not pass smog in California, but I bet if you put one of the 260 HP Goodwrench 350s in the car, bolted all the 305 parts back on it, it would be visually the same as the 305 and run clean enough to pass.

I agree with Fast355. The Goodwrench engine will have the same visual, pass inspection, smog test and I promise you it will be daylight and dark from that 305. I know people that have used this engine with a mild cam swap, they do pretty good, I would say it makes more like 215 hp in our cars though not the 260 rated. Buy the 190HP version cheaper and swap the cam.

so if I do the swap will I need other parts for it to work will the existing cpu work with the 350

If you could find a 350 truck, van, suv or cop car with the CCC Q-Jet you can take the primary jets and metering rods. Then swap the rear metering rods to something richer like a DR. Grind the tab down on the secondaries to allow for more than 45% opening of the secondaries of the 305 carb. The computer on your car is very dumb and basic and will have no real issue running a 350 with a stock or even small cam.

If your original engine is the L69 High Output engine with a knock sensor, you will also need to swap in a 350 knock sensor and module. Everything else will work fine. You can tune the carb by swapping out secondary metering rods but that will only have an effect at full throttle. At part throttle the computer will compensate for the larger engine (unless your carb is really messed up).
