Positive terminal
 

I recently purchased a 86 iroc-z. The previous owner decided for some odd reason to completely cut the battery cables out does anyone have a diagram or picture of how to or were the positive and negative battery terminals connect to, I know theres the starter and another positive wire to the fuse panel just trying to locate placement of wires

Main positive cable goes from the batt to the starter solenoid. Some variants also had a pigtail to the alternator (charge wire), and some a pigtail to the ECM.

Negative is from batt to the "pistol" or "Indiana" bracket below the alt, with a pigtail to the core support.

Not sure how much is similar between '86 Chevy and '88 Pontiac, but here's a picture of my car with it's original cables, when I pulled the battery to clean up the tray.

You'll notice it uses a smaller gauge wire off of the positive terminal to feed an accessory block. Don't know if you have that or not, but if you do, you'll want to get power to it.
