454 value...
 
So I was in the local salvage yard earilwr today looking for some parts for my wife's yukon, and I found a early 2000's suburban with a 454 in it....I thought it would be an awesome project to put in the camaro...so I started pulling it. I got it out and thought it would be a good idea to pull the pan and tommy dismay the #1 cylender wall was destroyed....so i walked away....now that im back home im second guessing myself, i know cylenders can be sleved (my 383 has a sleved cylender, would it be worth it to go back and try to get it
cheep or is it toast...it was a 4 bolt block, it was already missing the intake so I don't know what induction it was and I dident get the head info b4 I left, what do u guys think?

Don't bother. A big block of any year was never factory fit into a third gen.
Everything you would have to do to put this engine into your Camaro would be custom.

putting a big block in it is something I've been wanting to do for awhile, I already have done the research on what it takes, I was more wondering if this was fixable to a working block or not, I've had positive results with the sleeve In my current engine, (the cylender wall was cracked after sitting outside w no hood for 6 months after we were hit by a tornado) but there was some carnage in this big block, although it looked localized to cyl #1, I already have a set of trick flow heads in storage, so head damage dosent matter, it's mainly the block and roatating assy I was wondering about

It depends what is wrong with it. If it's a hole thru the side of the cylinder into the water jacket I would touch it. If it just some gouges... maybe. Or keep looking. You should be able to find a usable engine. Give some salvage yards your name/number. Probably be able to get a running one.

That'll be the newer style big block. Not a 454. It's more like 496. It's quite a bit different inside from the Mark IV we're all familiar with. Not much out there in the way of aftermarket support for it.

Not a good idea.

ok so I made the right decision, the #1 was completely blown out, the reason I pulled the pan in the first place is I heard crap moving around when I was moving the block around, I dident actually check the year of the suburban, but it looked like a late 90s early 2000's,...same body style as my wife's old 2001 Tahoe, also the side of the block did say 7.4, is that still going to be a block I don't want? for future reference

A late 90's 7.4 is what I was going to use. It has roller lifters. Not sure what year was the last for flat tappets in a 454. 93 - 95?

ok...I looked up the diffrent generations of suburban...it was the 92-99 body style so its a true 454....dose that change anything and should I go back and take a 2nd look or is it still junk, also another queston, I know the 454 is normally externally balanced, but they do sell internally balanced rotating assy., and also the flywheels for the 2 piece rms for the small block and big block internally balanced engines are the same.....is the same true for 1 piece rms flywheels?

As enticing as it is, the engine in the suburban is not worth the effort. Even if you were able to get the engine for free, the machine work alone to make it usable would eat up a lot of cash that could be put to better use. You would be better off spending $1000 for a complete running engine than trying to fix a broken one.

yea, and who knows what damage is there past what I already saw...plus a 2 piece RMS block would be better for my application so I can use the same flywheel (I have a centerforce DYAD clutch and a hydraulic TOB conversion I need to install that's set up for a neutral balance 2 piece RMS )
