How hard is it to change cam in 91 305 tpi?

I am thinking of gettin an aftermarket cam for my 305 because in a few weeks when I get my taxes back im tearing my whole engine down and doing a lot of stuff. Is it hard to change the cam in this 91 305 tpi engine without removing the block? What do I have to do like remove the radiator or something to get it out? I have no idea, this is my first engine teardown ever so any help would help. Thanks:burnout:

Complete induction has to come off. Also radiator, steering pump, pullies, distributor, timing chain. You'll need a harmonic balancer puller, I rented one. You'll also have to slightly bend the metal supports in front of the radiator to slide out the cam. I'm sure others can give you a more detailed explanation. Put a rag down in the distributor hole so nothing falls in there. Take off the valve covers and set the valve lash, I'm assuming this is a non roller motor I don't know. You'll need new gaskets for the valve covers, intake, timing chain and maybe others I forget.

I'm not positive but didn't the 91 Z28 tpi's isn't that a 350 engine. I have a 91 RS tbi and its a 305. Mines uses roller lifters so I'm sure his does too.

You can get a 305 and 350 tpi motor in 91 grafx. Both are hydraulic roller cams. With roller cams, I belive you set the valve lash to 0. I have never changed a cam before so I cannot give you detailed instructions but what I can tell you is to label every single thing you take off your motor. This is your first tear down and most people just starting out with this stuff and just take all this stuff off there motor and then have no idea what bolt went where. Mark everythig and put bolts in a labeled baggy. Make sure you do not drop anything in the motor when the intake is off. you will need a cam install tool. Make sure you use proper assembly lube also on new cam and put it in real slow. Maybe someone else here can give you more tips on this. just take your time and read a lot of directions.

Theres only 4 bolts that hold the braces in, they are easily moved rather than being bent. Its not difficult to swap cams, just time consuming. I'd advise dropping the oil pan at least enough to get the timing cover off, fighting the gasket and metal lip on the timing cover is no fun and its simple to just drop the pan.

Is your car an auto or stick? I'm curious about what the lift actually measures on whats in it now.

My car is an automoatic. I am doing the heads and intake too so everything is going to be off anyway. I dont know what you guys are talking about when u say valve lash and that stuff I have never changed a cam and I really dont know much about it all I know is that I am gona have to find out the hard way.

I don't think valve lash is as difficult on a roller cam as it is a hydr. one. I may be wrong. On a hyd. cam you have to loosen the rocker arms till slight resistance. Then do like a 3/4 turn or so, not exactly sure, but it allows the correct valve timing.

rollor lifters starting in 87....yes he has them

What kind of roller rocker amrs can i get for my motor. I dont know what stud size or what ration i should use. I think I am going to use 1.5 because I don t know much about cams or any of that stuff so I am gona stay with the stock ratio but I want roller rockers.
