91 Firebird vs 02 Mustang I have a 91 Firebird 305 TBI auto, all stock except for new plugs, wires, rotor and cap. There is a person that I work with that has an 02 Mustang V6 3.8. I have run him before in my 94 Camaro (see sig.) but unfortunately didnt get to rape him in my 86 :(, but thats not the point. In my 94 we were pretty even throughout(bout a 1/8 mile race more or less) on damp roads. I am debating whether to challenge him to take me in my new Firebird. The Mustang is an auto and has a high flow airfilter, plugs and wires, and a 2.5''(i think) cat-back system. I pretty much know the outcome of this one, but i was wondering how bad will it be? Also, I will be getting a full exhaust done to this car as soon as the money comes in along with getting all the smog stuff taken out. After i do this, will I be able to take him or will it just be less shameful of a loss? |
the neww exuest should give you a 30 to 50 horsepower increase ittle be close dont shift till 7000rpms |
I guess so lol, anyway yeah it wouldnt be a bad race, I just never see any fast 3.8's unless they have internal work or a blower so you may have a chance. After the exhaust though, ill give you the advantage then. |

A full exhaust on an LO3 car is worth around 20hp. Don't shift anything past 5k. Your motor makes peak power at around 4700 rpm's and letting it rev much higher beyond that will slow you down. Your combo should be a solid mid to low 15 second recipe and you should be able to beat that stang. |
What's up with all the new guys saying "Don't shift until you reach 8000 RPM!"? Most of us already know any stock third gen runs out of gas well before 5000 RPM. |

Anybody know the hp ratings and 1/4 times for those mustangs? |
Being your TBI, he may give you a run, but you'll take him. I've raced a couple of those mustangs in my 3.1(stock), and they crept past me. One was 02' 5speed v6, the other was an 02' auto vert v6...you'll take them off the line as I do everytime. From there they come back slowly. |

That's cause you have that crazy final ratio in first gear. |
shifting at 8k You know there may be a explanation behind the guys thinking they shift that high :idiot: on a good amount of thirdgens the tach is WAYYY off. When I go about half throttle my tach reads past 7k :lmao: Just a thought. - Charlie |

I raced an automatic '96 Mustang GT and beat him by a fender with my nearly stock automatic LO3. I also beat an automatic '05 Mustang V6. All I really have is a dual snorkel, 3'' Flowmaster catback (w/ no cat) and I'd say at least 10* advanced timing. I'm not sure why so many LO3 guys are running high 16's at the track, because I don't have any problems keeping up with cars that run in the 15's. Basically, it might be close, but I'd think that you'd probably get the win. Get a full exhaust and there won't be any doubts. |
I had one of those '87 Cobra GT's. I was able to get the race package through a buddy in Dearborn where they did the development for it. Came with a 3/4 race cam and trunkator kit for the intake. I guess they were having a lot of problems with the welds on the intakes blowing off from the increased boost so they slapped that on there. I only managed a 12.34 with it stock but it wasn't really set up for drag racing. |
i do believe this forum needs some sort of moderation for everyone that cant stay ontopic, including me |
I really shouldn't bother..........but I thought Ford starting putting the "Cobra" insigna back on the 1993. With the 17" wheels and GT40 intake etc. Except for the 60's cars of course. |
If you would like to discuss your 87 Cobra GT please go to: Northeast Thirdgen F-Body Home Page!. Apache John. IIRC Fox bodied Cobra's were built in 79, and reintroduced in 93, as you said. |
Hey kcstoltzmn1 Direct from Ford. Therer was no cobra in 1987 you tool.

Both the LX and GT also got a new interior including an improved dashboard that grouped the instrumentation in a pod in front of the driver. |

But if you want a real race, then you have to meet someone with a GNX. There were only 548 of those and came stock with a twin turboed 350. Sweet cars. If you can find the ever ellusive all whites ones, then those are a real treat. As you can tell I'm jealous. I wish my car came stock with a turbo, then I'd be all over this dude and his puny TBI 305. I'm really looking forward to seeing pics of that 409 duel 4 barrels lowrise intake. When do you think you'll have it done? |
TT 350? lol thought it was a 3.8L V6 with a turbo |
